Black Doves creator Joe Barton has confirmed that development for a potential third season is already underway, signaling high internal confidence in the spy thriller’s future at Netflix. Speaking on the Pilot TV podcast on November 2, 2026, Barton revealed that a writers’ room for Season 3 is currently active, even though the streaming platform has yet to issue a formal renewal.

The news comes just days after the full release of Season 2 on November 5, 2026. While an official greenlight remains pending as of November 8, Barton stated that Netflix is “really behind” the series. The creator’s comments suggest that the creative team is moving forward with scripts to ensure a smoother transition between seasons, following a two-year gap between the first and second installments.

Expanding the Black Doves Universe

Should the series proceed to a third season, Barton has indicated a desire to move beyond the central narrative of Helen Webb to explore the backstories of secondary characters. Specifically, Barton has proposed focusing on the assassin duo Eleanor and Williams, providing more context for their roles within the show’s clandestine world.

Season 2 also laid the groundwork for a long-term conflict by introducing “Kestrel,” a shadowy organization serving as a primary antagonist group. Barton has described Kestrel as a persistent threat comparable to “the SPECTRE to their James Bond,” suggesting that the group is intended to be a recurring element in future storylines.

Performance and Critical Reception

The push for a third season follows a strong critical showing for the latest episodes. Season 2 currently holds a 92% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, maintaining the high standard set by the series’ 2024 debut. However, the path to a formal renewal may depend on viewership data currently being tracked by Netflix.

While Season 1 of Black Doves achieved 10.8 million views in its opening week in December 2024, the active writers’ room indicates that the production team is preparing for a continuation of the London-set espionage drama. Despite the lack of an official announcement, performance data for the second season will likely determine the show’s ultimate trajectory.

For now, the narrative remains centered on the fallout of the Season 2 finale, which introduced significant shifts in the political landscape of the series and the rising influence of Kestrel.
