Matt Smith Joins Karen Gillan & Arthur Darvill for Pondcast

  • Podcast Reunion: Matt Smith is in discussions to join former co-stars Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill for a Doctor Who rewatch podcast titled The Pondcast.
  • Production Status: While Steven Moffat has already been interviewed, the hosts are currently working to finalize Smith’s schedule for an in-person recording at Darvill’s home.

Matt Smith Discusses Return for The Pondcast

Matt Smith is currently in discussions to reunite with his former co-stars Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill for a new project titled The Pondcast. This project is a Doctor Who rewatch podcast hosted by Gillan and Darvill, who famously portrayed companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams. It has been 12 years since Matt Smith made his final regular appearance as the Eleventh Doctor in the 2013 Christmas special, The Time of the Doctor.

Arthur Darvill confirmed the potential collaboration in an August 2026 interview with Doctor Who Magazine. During the interview, Darvill noted that he has already spoken to Smith about joining the podcast. Karen Gillan also provided an update on the situation, stating that while Smith has expressed a desire to appear, the production team is currently working on locking down his specific schedule. Getting lead actors together can be tough, much like the scheduling required for Gary Oldman on Slow Horses Season 6.

Guest Appearances and Production Plans

If the reunion occurs, the podcast episode featuring Smith is planned to be recorded in person at Arthur Darvill’s home. The series has already begun gathering significant contributors from the era; former showrunner Steven Moffat has already been interviewed as a guest for The Pondcast. This focus on the Eleventh Doctor’s era aligns with other upcoming media, including The Eleventh Doctor Adventures scheduled for 2026.

Beyond the podcast, Arthur Darvill is also reuniting with Alex Kingston (River Song) for a separate audio project. This Big Finish spinoff, titled The Death and Life of River Song: River and Rory, is set for release in January 2027. These developments come as the franchise continues to expand through various mediums, including the Netflix Hunchback of Notre Dame and other streaming properties.

Expanding the Doctor Who Universe

The main Doctor Who television series recently underwent a major change, featuring a regeneration from Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor into a new incarnation played by Billie Piper. In addition to the main series, a live-action UNIT spinoff titled The War Between the Land and the Sea is confirmed to premiere on the BBC in late 2026.

While fans wait for Smith to finalize his podcast appearance, the actor remains busy with major cinematic projects. Matt Smith’s upcoming schedule includes a role in Star Wars: Starfighter, which is currently scheduled for release in May 2027. Despite his busy film career, the ongoing discussions for The Pondcast suggest a continued connection to his time in the TARDIS alongside Gillan and Darvill.
