Muse Group Releases Audacity 4.0 With Official Windows ASIO Support

Audacity 4.0 officially launched on September 3, 2026, marking the most significant architectural overhaul in the open-source audio editor’s 26-year history. Released by Muse Group, the update replaces the aging codebase with a modern framework designed to support non-destructive editing and native high-DPI displays.

The transition to version 4.0 fundamentally changes how the software handles audio data. Historically, Audacity functioned as a destructive editor, meaning that when a user trimmed a clip or applied an effect, the underlying audio data was modified or removed from the project file. The new version introduces a non-destructive workflow where trimming a clip merely hides the audio; users can now drag the edges of a clip to restore previously hidden segments at any time.

Technical Modernization and Performance

To facilitate these changes, Audacity has been rebuilt using the Qt framework. This shift resolves long-standing issues with modern hardware, enabling native high-DPI scaling for 4K monitors and more consistent system-level dark mode integration. Windows users also receive a major platform-specific update: official ASIO playback and recording support is now included in the standard build, a feature previously hindered by licensing complexities.

The update introduces a new project file format, .aup4. While version 4.0 can import older .aup3 projects, the conversion is one-way. Once a project is saved in the new format, it cannot be opened in version 3.x or earlier. Users are encouraged to maintain backups of critical legacy projects before migrating them to the new environment.

New Tools and Known Gaps

The editing interface has been refined with several workflow-oriented additions. A dedicated Split tool, mapped to the ‘S’ key, allows for faster clip management, and individual tracks now feature integrated level meters for more precise monitoring during playback and mixing. A new “Workspaces” feature allows users to toggle between “Modern,” “Classic,” and “Music” layouts depending on their specific project needs.

However, the total rebuild of the software means that some legacy features have not yet been re-implemented. The initial 4.0.0 release lacks several tools present in the 3.x branch, most notably:

  • MIDI track support and editing.
  • Time tracks for project-wide tempo adjustments.
  • Certain scripting macros and legacy plugin formats like LADSPA and Nyquist.

While standard VST3, Audio Units (AU), and LV2 plugins remain supported, users who rely heavily on MIDI or specific automation scripts may need to wait for subsequent point releases as Muse Group works to port these features into the new Qt-based architecture.

The visual identity of the software has also been updated to match the “Muse Suite” aesthetic. This final design follows a period of community debate in late 2025 regarding a leaked prototype logo that was eventually simplified for this release. The new interface maintains the familiar timeline layout but adopts a flatter, more modular look consistent with modern creative software suites.
