The spinoff brings LL Cool J back to the forefront as Special Agent Sam Hanna, a role he recently transitioned from the sun-soaked coast of Hawaii to the streets of Manhattan. However, the most anticipated reunion for fans of the franchise—a pairing of Hanna with his longtime NCIS: Los Angeles partner G. Callen—faces a significant real-world obstacle.
While the new series offers a fresh start for Hanna, the likelihood of a cameo from Chris O’Donnell is low due to his current professional obligations. O’Donnell is currently starring as Captain Don Sharpe in 9-1-1: Nashville, an ABC spinoff that launched during the 2025-2026 season. Because O’Donnell is now leading a major production for a competing network (ABC/Disney), the scheduling and contractual logistics required to bring G. Callen to a CBS/Paramount production present a major hurdle that industry analysts suggest is rarely cleared in the current television landscape.
A New Partnership in New York
With Callen sidelined by network competition, NCIS: New York introduces a new dynamic for Sam Hanna. Scott Caan joins the cast as Nick Schaeffer, described as a roguish agent who becomes Hanna’s primary partner. The casting of Caan creates a unique “meta” situation for long-term viewers of the CBS “Lenkov-verse.” Caan previously portrayed Danny “Danno” Williams on Hawaii Five-0, a character who famously interacted with Sam Hanna during a multi-show crossover event. Despite that shared history, Caan is playing an entirely new character in the New York spinoff rather than reprising his former role.
The series’ narrative catalyst involves a personal tragedy for Hanna. The premiere sees him traveling to New York City after his friend, Navy reservist Jack Halloway, is found dead. This investigation serves as the entry point for Hanna to join forces with Schaeffer and ASIC Robyn Wells, played by Jennifer Beals.
The Tuesday Night Strategy
The arrival of NCIS: New York follows the cancellation of NCIS: Tony & Ziva, which Paramount+ ended in December 2025 after a single season. The New York spinoff is now a cornerstone of CBS’s “NCIS Tuesday” strategy. For the Fall 2026 season, the network has scheduled the new series in the 9:00 PM ET/PT time slot, sandwiched between the flagship NCIS and the prequel series NCIS: Origins.
This three-hour block represents a concentrated effort to maintain the franchise’s dominance on Tuesday nights. While the absence of the Hanna-Callen partnership may be felt by viewers who followed the duo for over a decade in Los Angeles, the addition of established procedural veterans like Caan and Beals suggests the network is looking to build a new foundation in the New York office rather than relying solely on nostalgia.
