The scale of OpenAI’s effort highlights a growing divide between traditional academic research and “brute force” AI discovery. This operation is estimated to have cost millions of dollars in compute resources, a level of power unavailable to most university mathematics departments.

Beyond the hardware advantage, the dispute involves questions of data ethics. Buckmaster has raised concerns that OpenAI may have leveraged data from his private Codex sessions—a tool used by researchers to assist with coding and formalizing proofs—to inform its own models. While OpenAI has denied accessing specific user data for this purpose, the company acknowledged that “de-identified data” from product usage is frequently used to improve its models, which include the GPT-6 Astra architecture standard in 2026.

“Forced” Solutions and the Millennium Prize

Despite OpenAI’s claim of a solution, mathematical experts have pointed to a technical distinction that may affect the company’s eligibility for the $1 million bounty from the Clay Mathematics Institute. The OpenAI proof specifically addresses the “forced” Navier-Stokes equations, which include an external force term.
