The ecosystem reached this milestone following two high-profile launches in early September. Anthropic added CarPlay support for its Claude app on September 4, followed by Microsoft, which brought Copilot to the dashboard on September 11. These additions provide drivers with a range of LLM (Large Language Model) options for research, drafting messages, or general conversation while on the road.
Despite the influx of competitors, Microsoft Copilot joined the platform at a time when Google Gemini remains the only major AI assistant without a dedicated CarPlay application. A standalone dashboard experience for Gemini has not yet been released.
Functional Differences and Limitations
While these third-party chatbots offer sophisticated conversational capabilities, they operate under stricter technical constraints than Apple’s native assistant. Unlike Siri, third-party AI apps on CarPlay do not support hands-free “wake words.” Drivers cannot trigger ChatGPT or Claude by speaking their names; instead, the app must be launched by manually tapping its icon on the vehicle’s dashboard touch screen to initiate a voice session.
Furthermore, these apps are limited to voice-based information tasks. They lack system-level access to vehicle hardware, meaning they cannot adjust the car’s climate control, open windows, or check tire pressure. These deeper integrations remain exclusive to Siri, which saw its own major update with the release of “Siri AI” alongside iOS 27 on September 14, 2026.
Subscription Requirements
Accessing these chatbots from the driver’s seat may come with an additional cost depending on the provider. While some apps offer basic conversational features for free, reporting indicates that both Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity typically require a paid subscription tier to unlock full voice functionality within the CarPlay environment.
The current lineup of CarPlay-compatible chatbots includes:
