Sony Schedules 24 Jump Street for 2027, Skipping a Sequel Number

Sony Pictures has officially scheduled 24 Jump Street for a theatrical release on December 10, 2027. The announcement confirms the return of the comedy franchise after a long hiatus, marking the first time the series has appeared on the big screen since 2014’s 22 Jump Street.

In a move that aligns with the franchise’s established brand of meta-humor, the studio is skipping the chronological “23” title entirely. The decision to jump straight to the 24th installment serves as a self-aware joke regarding the long development period and the real-life 13-year gap between the second and third films.

Creative Team and Production

Rodney Rothman is set to direct the film, stepping into the role previously held by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Rothman is a familiar face to the franchise, having served as a co-writer on 22 Jump Street. He more recently gained acclaim as the co-director of the Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Rothman is also co-writing the screenplay alongside Jonah Hill and Meghan Malloy. Lord and Miller, while not directing this time, will remain involved in the project as producers. The transition to Rothman as director suggests a potential evolution in the film’s visual style, given his background in high-concept animation and fast-paced comedy writing.

The 2027 Holiday Box Office

The December 10, 2027, release date positions the film in one of the most competitive theatrical windows of the decade. It is currently slated to debut just one week before two massive franchise tentpoles: Avengers: Secret Wars and The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

By placing the R-rated comedy against these blockbuster titans, Sony is signaling significant confidence in the property’s enduring popularity. The December 10, 2027 release will be exactly 13 years and six months after the release of ’22 Jump Street’ in June 2014.

This official scheduling effectively ends years of rumors involving different iterations of the project. Sony had previously explored various directions for the series, including the heavily publicized Men in Black crossover and a female-led spin-off.
