John Leguizamo received the Career Achievement Award on Friday at the Critics Choice Association’s 6th Annual Celebración of Cinema & Television. The event took place as David Ellison, the billionaire poised to lead the newly formed Skydance media empire, prepares for the finalization of a $110 billion merger.

The award ceremony occurred on the same day Ellison officially announced that the massive entity resulting from the merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery will be branded simply as Skydance. The $110 billion deal is expected to formally close on Tuesday, October 6, consolidating several of Hollywood’s most historic assets under a single banner.

The ceremony was held at the Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, recognizing Leguizamo for his significant career achievements.

Leguizamo’s recognition carries significant weight following his recent commercial success. He recently starred in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, a global box-office juggernaut that surpassed the $1 billion mark in just three weeks. This performance has reinforced his position as a major industry voice capable of bridging the gap between artistic achievement and commercial viability.

The Celebración of Cinema & Television, which honors outstanding achievements by Latino, Black, and AAPI creatives, featured several other notable industry figures this year. Alongside Leguizamo, the Critics Choice Association recognized Judy Reyes with the Trailblazer Award and Laysla De Oliveira with the Breakthrough Actress Award for her work in television.

As the October 6 closing date for the Skydance merger approaches, the industry remains focused on how the new leadership—including Ellison—will navigate the tension between corporate restructuring and the preservation of Hollywood’s traditional production infrastructure.
