Mariusz Komenda, a standout contestant on the eighth series of MasterChef Poland, has died at the age of 44 following a battle with an aggressive brain tumor. His death was confirmed on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, marking the end of a courageous year-long struggle with his health.
Komenda rose to national prominence in 2019 as a semi-finalist on the popular cooking competition, where he was noted for his technical skill and passion for regional flavors. Following his success on the show, he established himself as a prominent figure in the Polish culinary scene, opening Sztuka Restaurant in his hometown of Środa Śląska in 2020.

The chef’s health journey began unexpectedly in January 2026, when he was rushed to the hospital with symptoms that doctors initially suspected were related to a stroke. However, subsequent diagnostic scans identified a more severe condition: a glioma located in the right thalamus.
Over the following months, Komenda underwent an intensive medical regimen that included two major brain surgeries and radiotherapy. Despite the physical toll of the treatments, he remained dedicated to his craft and his family, achieving a personal milestone in April 2026 by launching a new restaurant named Father & Son alongside his son.

Tributes have poured in from the MasterChef community, reflecting on Komenda’s impact on those he worked with during the 2019 season. Grzegorz Zawierucha, the winner of MasterChef Poland Series 8, expressed his condolences on social media, honoring the memory of his former co-star and friend. Other colleagues, including Mateusz Krojenka, have also shared public tributes to the late chef.
The aggressive brain tumour diagnosis eventually proved too difficult to overcome, but Komenda’s legacy continues through his culinary contributions and the restaurants he established during his career. He is survived by his family and remembered by fans of the series for his resilience both in and out of the kitchen.
