A new carrier update targets cellular stability for users on the latest iOS beta.

Apple has released a new carrier settings update specifically for AT&T subscribers using the iPhone 18 Pro Max on the iOS 20.2 beta. This targeted patch is designed to resolve persistent 5G connectivity issues and improve network stability for the company’s latest flagship device.

The update arrives as the second carrier-specific fix for the iPhone 18 Pro Max within a 10-day window. Earlier in October 2026, a similar bundle was deployed for users on the public iOS 20.0.1 branch to address frequent cellular drops. According to community reports, this latest beta-tier update focuses on 5G Standalone (SA) stability, particularly in metropolitan areas where the device’s network stack previously struggled with cellular handoffs.

Carrier settings updates are distinct from standard iOS software updates. These smaller files contain data from the service provider that allows the iPhone to communicate more efficiently with the carrier’s network. They often enable new features such as 5G improvements, Wi-Fi Calling, and updated APN settings. While these updates typically install automatically, users can manually check for the version change to ensure their hardware is optimized.

To verify if the update is available, users should navigate to Settings > General > About. If a new version is ready, a pop-up prompt will appear within a few seconds asking to update the carrier settings. Once accepted, the carrier version number in the About menu will refresh to the latest iteration, typically shifting beta versions from a 60.x sequence to a 61.x sequence.

The deployment comes amid reports that some users have experienced hardware-software mismatches where the iPhone 18 Pro Max always says SOS or fails to regain a signal after entering a low-coverage area. While persistent SOS issues can sometimes indicate a hardware defect requiring replacement, this carrier bundle is expected to mitigate software-related failures in how the device handles AT&T’s specific frequency bands.

For users on the iOS 20.2 beta, installing the update is recommended to prevent dropped calls and to ensure the modem firmware correctly utilizes AT&T’s current network configurations. Apple has not yet confirmed when these specific cellular optimizations will merge into a broader public iOS release.
