Updated October 14, 2026. Choosing the best tablet is not simply a processor contest: the right answer depends on the apps you need, how often you write with a pen, whether you work at a desk or commute, and what the tablet costs after accessories. We compared eight currently released, available iPad and Android models using manufacturer specifications, current first-party listings and independent reporting. This is a research-based editorial comparison; AsumeTech has not physically tested these eight devices, and scores are not laboratory measurements.
Quick answer: the 11-inch iPad Air M4 is our most balanced recommendation for a general buyer. The M5 iPad Pro is for professional visual work, Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra is the giant Android work surface, the A16 iPad is the entry-level iPad, and the OnePlus Pad 4 or Lenovo Idea Tab Pro Gen 2 make sense in their supported regional markets. Pricing and availability were checked against October 2026 pages where possible; regional models, tax and promotions vary.
How we compared tablets without pretending to test them
Our research-only 10-point rubric weights everyday usability and app fit (25%), display and reading/drawing comfort (20%), performance and responsiveness (20%), value including accessory costs (15%), stylus and keyboard ecosystem (10%), and documented software support and service access (10%). Scores are reasoned editorial estimates, not averaged benchmark results or a substitute for direct hands-on tests. We reduce confidence for models released only days ago, particularly the Galaxy Tab S12 family, where independent long-term endurance data is not yet mature.
We prioritize exact generation and configuration rather than a product family name. A 256GB M5 iPad Pro has a different CPU/memory configuration from some 1TB/2TB variants; Samsung Wi-Fi and 5G Galaxy Tab SKUs differ; OnePlus Pad 4 pricing and service are India-specific; Lenovo pen/keyboard bundles vary by country. We avoid the common error of mixing a 2025 launch price with a changed October 2026 official checkout price.

Price note: US Apple and Samsung figures above are observed first-party October 2026 listings for specified Wi-Fi storage tiers, not historical MSRP. India figures for OnePlus and Lenovo are launch/list references that require local rechecking. The new Galaxy Tab S12 series began US sales on October 7, 2026; the Apple iPad mini A17 Pro and iPad A16 are older generations that remain on sale.
The eight tablet recommendations
P001. Apple iPad Air 11-inch (M4, 128GB Wi-Fi) — Best for most people
Research-only score: 9.2/10. Exact configuration: 11-inch Liquid Retina LCD; M4 with 12GB unified memory; 128GB Wi-Fi configuration; Apple Pencil Pro and Magic Keyboard supported but sold separately. Pricing: US $749, current Apple direct listing (October 2026).
The M4 Air is our default because the chip and 12GB memory are more than adequate for note-taking, large documents, creative apps and routine multitasking. The 11-inch version is easier to hold and carry than a 13-inch tablet, while the Pencil Pro offers a credible drawing path. Apple sells the keyboard and pen separately, so a laptop-like setup costs materially more than the slate. Its conventional LCD is not the 120Hz tandem OLED of the Pro; buyers sensitive to scrolling smoothness or HDR contrast should compare screens in person.
Best for: students, creative hobbyists and professionals who want a balanced iPad. Skip if: people who specifically need OLED, 120Hz refresh, or desktop macOS applications.
Important buying and regional caveat: Apple announced a US $599 launch price in March 2026, but the current US Apple purchase page shows $749 for this 128GB Wi-Fi configuration. Use the live checkout figure, not old launch coverage. Cellular adds cost and a carrier plan. Apple does not publish a fixed future iPadOS support end-date for this exact model.
Source check: official manufacturer specification or listing and independent coverage / review. Our score is an editorial synthesis of these sources and the stated use case, not a device we tested.
P002. Apple iPad Pro 11-inch (M5, 256GB Wi-Fi) — Best for serious creative work
Research-only score: 9.0/10. Exact configuration: 11-inch 2420×1668 tandem OLED; adaptive 10–120Hz ProMotion; M5 9-core CPU/10-core GPU and 12GB memory on 256GB version; Thunderbolt/USB4 up to 40Gb/s. Pricing: US $1,199, current Apple direct listing.
The M5 iPad Pro earns its premium for the display, color and contrast, responsive Pencil experience, high-bandwidth Thunderbolt port and processing headroom. On the entry 256GB version, Apple specifies a 9-core CPU and 12GB memory; higher-storage models change the chip and memory configuration, so benchmark comparisons must match the SKU. The screen can be outstanding for HDR content, but an iPadOS workflow remains different from a desktop app workflow even when a keyboard and external monitor are attached.
Best for: illustrators, video editors and HDR-focused creators already invested in iPad apps. Skip if: buyers who mostly stream video, read email or expect a full macOS workstation.
Important buying and regional caveat: Apple Pencil Pro, Magic Keyboard, higher storage, cellular connectivity and optional nano-texture glass are additional costs or variant-specific options. Current US store pricing is higher than the 2025 launch figure quoted in older articles. The 11-inch model prioritizes portability; the 13-inch Pro provides more canvas at additional expense.
Source check: official manufacturer specification or listing and independent coverage / review. Our score is an editorial synthesis of these sources and the stated use case, not a device we tested.
P003. Samsung Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra (SM-X940NZAAXAR, 256GB Wi-Fi) — Best extra-large Android canvas
Research-only score: 8.9/10. Exact configuration: 14.6-inch 2960×1848 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED 2X; Dimensity 9500; 12GB/256GB; 11,600mAh; Wi-Fi 7; included S Pen; Android 17 / One UI 9. Pricing: US $1,399.99, Samsung direct October 2026.
This is the large-screen specialist. Samsung’s included S Pen and DeX environment make the giant panel useful for multiwindow notes, planning and document review. Samsung announced the S12 family September 30 and began US sales October 7, so independent long-term battery and sustained-performance evidence remains thinner than for older tablets. The 14.6-inch screen is excellent for a desk but physically awkward for casual couch use. The 45W charger is not included in the US box; the advertised charge time assumes an appropriate adapter.
Best for: Android power users who genuinely use split-screen notes, reference material and drawing. Skip if: commuters who hold their tablet one-handed or buyers seeking a light, cheap slate.
Important buying and regional caveat: The US SM-X940NZAAXAR is a Wi-Fi-only 12GB/256GB Gray unit. Cellular models and storage tiers have different identifiers and prices. Samsung states seven generations of Android updates and seven years of security support; check local terms. Manufacturer 23-hour video figure is a controlled-condition claim, not our test result.
Source check: official manufacturer specification or listing and independent coverage / review. Our score is an editorial synthesis of these sources and the stated use case, not a device we tested.
P004. Samsung Galaxy Tab S12+ (SM-X840NZAAXAR, 256GB Wi-Fi) — Best Samsung tablet for work without the Ultra size
Research-only score: 8.7/10. Exact configuration: 12.6-inch 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED 2X; Dimensity 9500; 12GB/256GB; 10,600mAh; included S Pen; Android 17 / One UI 9; 45W charging support. Pricing: US $1,199.99, Samsung direct October 2026.
The Plus shares the new Dimensity 9500 generation and S Pen inclusion with the Ultra, but its 12.6-inch panel fits bags and work surfaces more naturally. It is a stronger ergonomic compromise for students and office users who need two apps side by side. Samsung’s latest One UI multitasking is appealing, but software behavior and specialized desktop applications still differ from Windows and macOS. Because it only recently launched, we weight independently confirmed specifications more heavily than unverified claims about sustained battery endurance.
Best for: Samsung phone owners who want pen notes, DeX and a spacious but less cumbersome display. Skip if: buyers expecting the Plus to be an inexpensive alternative to the iPad Air.
Important buying and regional caveat: The US listing is specifically SM-X840NZAAXAR, 256GB Wi-Fi, not a 5G variant. The 45W power adapter and keyboard are separate purchases. At only $200 below the Ultra at current US list prices, its value rests on preferred size rather than raw price savings.
Source check: official manufacturer specification or listing and independent coverage / review. Our score is an editorial synthesis of these sources and the stated use case, not a device we tested.
P005. OnePlus Pad 4 (India 8GB/256GB) — Best performance-focused Android tablet in India
Research-only score: 8.6/10. Exact configuration: 13.2-inch 3392×2400 144Hz LCD; Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5; 8GB/256GB; 13,380mAh; 80W SUPERVOOC; OxygenOS 16 on Android 16. Pricing: India ₹59,999 list; ₹54,999 only with eligible launch/bank offer.
The Pad 4 is unusually powerful for a tablet with an LCD: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, tall 7:5 display and high refresh rate create a compelling productivity-and-gaming combination. The 13,380mAh figure is capacity, not an independently measured runtime guarantee; 80W charging is a manufacturer maximum with compatible equipment. OnePlus’ smart keyboard and Stylo Pro are supported, but standard purchase bundles should not be assumed to include them. Software integration is most valuable with other OnePlus devices.
Best for: India-based Android buyers prioritizing speed, battery capacity and multitasking. Skip if: US buyers without official warranty support, or users who need OLED and cellular data.
Important buying and regional caveat: This is an India-market recommendation. OnePlus lists the 8GB/256GB model at ₹59,999 before eligible discounts, and ₹54,999 was tied to a bank promotion; do not describe that offer as a permanent street price. The screen is LCD, not OLED. Verify streaming DRM, after-sales support and keyboard availability before importing to another country.
Source check: official manufacturer specification or listing and independent coverage / review. Our score is an editorial synthesis of these sources and the stated use case, not a device we tested.
P006. Apple iPad 11-inch (A16, 128GB Wi-Fi) — Best entry-level iPad
Research-only score: 8.5/10. Exact configuration: 11-inch-class Liquid Retina LCD; Apple A16; 128GB Wi-Fi; USB-C; Apple Pencil USB-C or 1st generation with adapter; Magic Keyboard Folio optional. Pricing: US $449, current Apple direct listing.
The basic A16 iPad remains the sensible entry point for buyers who want iPad apps without Air or Pro pricing. Engadget’s review found its performance adequate for common tablet tasks, which fits our emphasis on actual use cases over headline silicon. It does not support Apple Intelligence, and the screen is not the fully laminated high-refresh display found on pricier devices. For basic note-taking, the USB-C Pencil works; the first-generation Pencil requires an adapter and is not interchangeable with the Pencil Pro.
Best for: families, casual readers and students whose work is browser, video and notes. Skip if: users buying specifically for Apple Intelligence, high-end drawing or desktop-style multitasking.
Important buying and regional caveat: The model launched in 2025 but is still listed in Apple’s October 2026 lineup. Apple sells the 128GB Wi-Fi version at $449 and a 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular variant at $599 on the US store. Magic Keyboard Folio, Pencil and cellular service are additional expenses.
Source check: official manufacturer specification or listing and independent coverage / review. Our score is an editorial synthesis of these sources and the stated use case, not a device we tested.
P007. Apple iPad mini 8.3-inch (A17 Pro, 128GB Wi-Fi) — Best compact tablet for travel and reading
Research-only score: 8.3/10. Exact configuration: 8.3-inch 2266×1488 Liquid Retina LCD; A17 Pro; 128GB Wi-Fi; 293g; Apple Pencil Pro or USB-C Pencil; Bluetooth keyboards. Pricing: US $599, current Apple direct listing.
The mini solves a problem the large tablets cannot: carrying an entire iPad app library in a genuinely small bag or jacket pocket. Its 293g Wi-Fi weight and 8.3-inch screen make reading and quick annotation comfortable. The A17 Pro supports Apple Intelligence features available in its software region, and Pencil Pro compatibility helps with handwriting. The trade-off is the limited workspace for spreadsheets, large documents and simultaneous apps. Bluetooth keyboards work, but there is no Apple Magic Keyboard designed for the mini.
Best for: commuters, pilots, travelers, field notes and people who value one-handed portability. Skip if: anyone who wants a spacious keyboard workstation or multiwindow canvas.
Important buying and regional caveat: This A17 Pro generation arrived in 2024, not 2026, and should not be marketed as a new release. Its display is LCD with conventional refresh rather than ProMotion. Pencil, case, cellular option and keyboard are extra. At current US $599, portability rather than value per square inch is the reason to buy.
Source check: official manufacturer specification or listing and independent coverage / review. Our score is an editorial synthesis of these sources and the stated use case, not a device we tested.
P008. Lenovo Idea Tab Pro Gen 2 (India 8GB/256GB) — Best value large-screen Android tablet in supported markets
Research-only score: 8.2/10. Exact configuration: 13-inch 3504×2190 144Hz LTPS LCD; Snapdragon 8s Gen 4; 8GB/256GB India base configuration; 10,200mAh; 45W; Wi-Fi only; Android 16. Pricing: India ₹39,999 launch list; verify current seller and local bundle.
Lenovo’s 2026 second-generation Idea Tab Pro offers a large 3.5K display, Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 and 10,200mAh capacity at a substantially lower India launch price than flagship iPads or Galaxy S12 tablets. Lenovo PSREF confirms a 13-inch 3504×2190 panel, with a 144Hz refresh rate, and support for a pen and optional keyboard. Notebookcheck’s independent assessment praises the evolution while flagging higher price and software-support limitations. The tablet is not an LTE model, and accessory bundles differ by SKU and market.
Best for: students who want a roomy 144Hz display and pen-capable Android productivity for less. Skip if: buyers who prioritize OLED contrast, a very long software-update promise or cellular connectivity.
Important buying and regional caveat: The cited Lenovo PSREF model code ZAHD0125MD documents the Gen 2 platform but is not asserted to be the India retail SKU. The ₹39,999 figure is India’s launch list for the base tier, not a guaranteed October transaction price. Lenovo’s reported policy is two major Android upgrades and four years of security fixes, materially shorter than Samsung’s new flagship commitment.
Source check: official manufacturer specification or listing and independent coverage / review. Our score is an editorial synthesis of these sources and the stated use case, not a device we tested.
Tablet buying guide: the decisions that actually matter
iPadOS versus Android: choose the software first
Before choosing a chip, list the apps that you must run. iPadOS is strong for established creative software, handwriting apps and long-lived accessory ecosystems. Android tablets offer different strengths, including Samsung DeX, flexible window arrangements, file-management options and more variety in screen sizes and prices. Neither platform guarantees that a desktop-only app, browser extension or specialist university program will run. If a degree or job requires Windows/macOS applications, our college laptop recommendations are a better starting point than assuming a tablet replaces a computer.
Some Android tablets support desktop-like windowing and keyboards, but the interface is not the same as native desktop software. The right comparison is the entire task: can you open the needed file format, connect required peripherals, save and export correctly, and share with collaborators? A tablet that handles 90% of tasks elegantly but fails the one mandatory desktop application is the wrong primary machine.
Display technology, refresh rate and size
OLED offers deep black levels and excellent HDR contrast, but can be expensive; LCD tablets are often brighter-value choices for documents and daytime browsing. A 120Hz or 144Hz display can make pen input and scrolling feel smoother than a conventional 60Hz panel, but software, battery settings and actual app frame rates matter. Screen diagonal alone is misleading: a 14.6-inch Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra is much less pleasant to hold standing on a train than an 8.3-inch iPad mini. Conversely, the mini is cramped for split-screen reference material. Choose the physical size around your dominant posture: handheld, lap, desk or stand.
Stylus compatibility is model-specific, not brand-wide
Apple Pencil Pro is supported by the Air M4, Pro M5 and mini A17 Pro, but not by the entry-level A16 iPad; that model supports the USB-C Pencil and first-generation Pencil with the required adapter. Samsung includes an S Pen with both new Tab S12 tablets. OnePlus Stylo Pro and Lenovo pen packages are region- and bundle-dependent. For art, also check palm rejection, tilt, application compatibility and replacement-tip availability. A tablet that merely says ‘stylus compatible’ may not provide the pressure and latency behavior an illustrator needs.
Calculate the complete cost of a laptop-like setup
A keyboard cover, protective case, pen, spare nibs, charger, storage upgrade and cellular data plan can change the effective price by hundreds of dollars. The iPad Air M4 looked much cheaper at its March launch price than the current Apple US listing, so use current checkout pricing. Samsung’s S Pen inclusion improves the comparison, but its keyboard and 45W charger may cost extra. The OnePlus Pad 4 launch promotion temporarily included a pen and bank discount; neither should be treated as a guaranteed perpetual bundle. When a full keyboard is mandatory, compare the combined tablet package against our best laptops of 2026 before ordering.
RAM, storage and connectivity
128GB is adequate for streaming, light notes and cloud files, but offline video, large games, RAW photos and drawing projects can consume it quickly. Some Android tablets support microSD while current iPads do not; microSD is not equivalent to internal high-speed storage for every app. Wi-Fi-only and cellular models are different products. US Samsung Tab S12 model codes listed here are Wi-Fi configurations, and the OnePlus Pad 4 and Lenovo Idea Tab Pro Gen 2 selections are not recommendations for cellular use. If you require on-the-go mobile data, verify a locally supported cellular SKU, SIM/eSIM provisioning and carrier bands before purchase.
Battery life, charging and long-term support
Battery-capacity numbers cannot be directly compared across different chipsets and displays. Samsung’s ‘up to 23 hours’ video playback figure is a controlled manufacturer claim, not an AsumeTech measured result; similarly OnePlus’ 13,380mAh capacity does not prove a fixed runtime. Independent endurance reviews and your brightness, refresh-rate and workload settings are more useful. For long ownership, Samsung’s stated seven-year Tab S12 policy is unusually reassuring, while Lenovo’s shorter reported support window deserves attention. Apple does not publish a precise guaranteed end-date for every iPad model, so avoid promising a fixed number of updates without a published commitment.
Check the launch calendar and evidence maturity
As of October 14, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S12 family has been on US shelves for about a week. Early hands-on impressions can confirm fit and interface, but cannot substitute for months of reliability data. Conversely, older iPad A16 and mini A17 Pro models have more established reviews, even though they are not 2026 launches. A newly announced device that is still only available for preorder should not displace a currently available tablet in this buying guide. Verify return windows and warranty service in your country.
What to buy for specific tasks
Students: the iPad Air M4 is a balanced pen-and-app option; A16 iPad saves money; Lenovo Idea Tab Pro Gen 2 gives a large Android screen in India. Artists: prioritize iPad Pro M5 OLED and Pencil Pro if your creative apps run on iPadOS; the Tab S12 Ultra is the Android large-canvas alternative. Commuters: the iPad mini’s small footprint matters more than peak benchmark scores. Samsung ecosystem: Tab S12+ is easier to carry than Ultra. India performance buyers: OnePlus Pad 4 is powerful but its regional service and accessory availability need checking. Video and calls: add suitable wireless earbuds only if needed, rather than paying for an expensive tablet solely to improve audio.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best tablet for most people in 2026?
Our research-only default is the 11-inch iPad Air M4 because it balances app ecosystem, performance, portability and Pencil support. The 128GB Wi-Fi configuration is currently listed at $749 in the US, so value-minded buyers should compare the $449 A16 iPad and any authorized retailer discounts before buying.
Is the new Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra better than an iPad Pro?
Neither wins universally. The Samsung has a larger 14.6-inch OLED screen, included S Pen and Android/DeX workflows; the M5 iPad Pro has a compact 11-inch OLED option, Thunderbolt and an established iPad creative-app ecosystem. The Tab S12 Ultra was released October 7, 2026, so long-term third-party testing is less mature than for the M5 iPad Pro.
Does a tablet replace a laptop for college?
It can for reading, annotations, email, remote classes and many writing tasks, but not necessarily for CAD, specialized lab tools, software development, complex spreadsheets or exams that require desktop software. Confirm course requirements before purchasing; a laptop may be a better single-device investment.
Which tablets include a pen in the box?
Samsung lists the S Pen in the US Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra and S12+ boxes. Apple Pencil is an optional separate purchase for the iPads. OnePlus and Lenovo bundles vary by region, seller and promotion; check the exact package contents rather than a generic advertisement.
Which model is best for handwriting and reading?
The iPad mini A17 Pro is easiest to hold, while the Air M4 provides more room for a page plus notes. Lenovo’s large 13-inch display and Samsung’s included S Pen appeal to students who prefer wide canvases. Dedicated E Ink writing devices are a separate category, with different refresh and app trade-offs.
Do the listed tablets support 5G?
Not these exact Wi-Fi configurations. Apple offers separate Wi-Fi + Cellular options for its iPads; Samsung sells selected regional 5G variants, but the cited US SM-X940NZAAXAR and SM-X840NZAAXAR are Wi-Fi models. OnePlus Pad 4 India and Lenovo Idea Tab Pro Gen 2 here are Wi-Fi choices. Check carrier compatibility and eSIM support on a cellular SKU.
Are the scores based on AsumeTech hands-on tests?
No. These are transparent editorial research scores derived from documented specifications, prices, independent professional reviews where available, accessory support and buying trade-offs. No AsumeTech benchmark, battery-drain test, photo sample or personal ownership claim is made.
Should I buy now or wait for holiday sales?
Check retailer return policies and prices against the first-party baseline. Discounts can change quickly, especially after early October launches. Do not buy a higher-tier storage or cellular variant solely because a headline says ‘from’ a lower price; verify the actual configuration at checkout. For newly released Samsung S12 tablets, additional independent long-term reviews may also be worth waiting for.
