Why Vinland Saga Season 3 Is Stalled Despite the Manga’s 2025 Completion

Fans of the historical epic Vinland Saga have received a definitive, if disappointing, update regarding the production status of a third season. Despite the source material reaching its conclusion, series creator Makoto Yukimura confirmed on October 22, 2026, that the anime adaptation is not currently in development.

Responding to inquiries on X (formerly Twitter), Yukimura addressed the growing anticipation for Thorfinn’s return with a blunt assessment of the project’s status. “Sorry my friend, I have no good news about that,” Yukimura stated. “The project is not currently in progress.”

The update clarifies the status of a series that has been in a state of uncertainty since the second season concluded in June 2023. While staff members shared promotional artwork following the Season 2 finale suggesting that “Thorfinn’s journey will continue,” those teases were never followed by a formal production announcement from an animation studio or production committee.

The Production Bottleneck

The lack of progress comes as a surprise to some, given that the roadmap for the story is now fully established. The Vinland Saga manga officially concluded its serialization in July 2025, providing a complete narrative for the anime to follow. Two major story arcs—the Eastern Expedition and the final Vinland arc—remain unadapted.

Industry analysis suggests that the delay is likely tied to the schedule of MAPPA, the studio that took over production for the series’ second season. MAPPA is currently managing a heavy slate of high-profile franchises, including Jujutsu Kaisen Season 4 and Chainsaw Man Season 2. The concentration of resources on these blockbuster titles appears to have left Vinland Saga in a state of limbo.

A History of Debunked Rumors

Yukimura’s confirmation in October 2026 reinforces that no movement has occurred since Season 2 finished airing in June 2023, creating a gap of over three years with no official production start for Season 3.

While the “not in progress” status is a significant setback for those hoping for a 2027 release, it does not necessarily equate to a permanent cancellation. In the anime industry, it is common for several years to pass between seasons, especially when a production studio is balancing multiple major properties. However, for a series often cited as a premier alternative to historical dramas like Vikings, the three-year gap since the last episode aired continues to grow without a clear end in sight.
