Microsoft announced a major overhaul of the Xbox PC app on November 5, 2026, introducing significant performance improvements and a streamlined user interface. The update, currently available to members of the Xbox Insider program, addresses long-standing user feedback regarding the software’s speed and navigation complexity.

According to internal performance data, the rebuilt application now launches up to 60% faster than previous versions. These gains extend into the core user experience, with page load times for the Home, Store, and Game Pass sections improving by approximately 50%. Additionally, secondary in-app windows now open up to 65% faster, according to figures reported by TechPowerUp.

Unified Navigation and Social Integration

The redesign shifts the Xbox PC app toward a layout more consistent with the console experience and modern launcher standards. A primary focus of the update is the integration of social features directly into the main navigation sidebar. Previously tucked away in separate menus, the Friends list and active social interactions are now accessible from the primary interface, allowing users to track online status and party invites without leaving their library view.

Search functionality has also been unified. Rather than requiring users to filter between different categories, the new search bar provides consolidated results that include:

  • Full game titles from the Microsoft Store and Game Pass library
  • Installed games currently on the local machine
  • Downloadable content (DLC) and add-ons
  • Other players and community members

Microsoft indicated that this architectural rebuild is not merely for immediate speed gains but is intended to allow the development team to deploy new features more rapidly in the future.

Availability and Access

The update is currently restricted to the “PC Gaming Preview” tier of the Xbox Insider program. Users who wish to test the new interface must enroll their Windows device through the Xbox Insider Hub app. While Microsoft has not provided a specific date for a wider rollout, major updates typically undergo four to eight weeks of Insider testing before graduating to the general public.

Beyond the desktop application, Microsoft noted that elements of this redesign are also being extended to Xbox Cloud Gaming interfaces on smart TVs and VR headsets, aiming for a consistent visual identity across all platforms where Game Pass is available.
