Richard Lloyd, the influential guitarist and co-founder of the seminal New York band Television, died on November 8, 2026, following a battle with cancer. He was 75 years old.

The news was confirmed through an official statement on Television’s X account. Lloyd had been diagnosed in March 2026 with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of bile duct cancer. He is survived by his wife, Sheila.

Lloyd is widely regarded as a pivotal figure in the development of punk and alternative rock. His death comes nearly four years after the passing of his longtime bandmate and musical foil, Tom Verlaine, who died in early 2023. Together, the pair redefined the role of the guitar in rock music, moving away from traditional blues-based soloing in favor of the intricate, interlocking melodic patterns that became the hallmark of the band’s sound.

The Architect of Marquee Moon

The technical legacy of Richard Lloyd is most prominently displayed on Television’s 1977 debut album, Marquee Moon. Often cited as one of the greatest rock albums of all time, the record showcased a “dual-guitar” interplay between Lloyd and Verlaine that was revolutionary for its time. While Verlaine often handled the more idiosyncratic, jagged leads, Lloyd was noted for his fluid technique and architectural sense of harmony, providing the structural foundation for the band’s complex arrangements.

Beyond his work with Television, Lloyd maintained a prolific solo career and became a sought-after session musician and producer. His influence extended deep into the 1980s and 90s, affecting the trajectory of indie rock and post-punk. Musicians across various genres have frequently cited his disciplined yet inventive approach to the fretboard as a major inspiration.

Tributes from the music community began appearing shortly after the announcement of his death. Johnny Marr, the former guitarist of The Smiths, praised Lloyd as a “seeker and finder and a true inspiration,” acknowledging his role as a fundamental architect of the punk movement.

According to reports from the Daily Express, Lloyd’s health had been a private concern for his inner circle since his diagnosis earlier this year. His passing marks the end of an era for the CBGB-born scene that fundamentally altered the landscape of modern guitar music.
