All fitness trackers are different, but there are some basic things you should look for, like long battery life, a comfortable fit on your wrist, built-in GPS, and the ability to track your fitness and monitor your heart rate. Depending on your budget, some fitness trackers will have more features than others, so you may have to choose the most important ones.
Style is another important thing to think about when picking out the best fitness tracker for you. How they look on your wrist is important; most are slim. However, some can look like smartwatches with a bigger clock face and more buttons. Some smart rings are made to watch over you while you sleep.
But before you worry about which fitness tracker is right for you, we’ve done the workouts and put them through rigorous testing to see how well they work, how their metrics help our overall health journey, and how long their batteries last. Here are the best fitness trackers, from the most expensive to the least expensive.
The Best Fitness Trackers 2023
The Fitbit Luxe is our number one fitness tracker thanks to its excellent health monitoring tools, stylish design, and the strength of the fantastic Fitbit app that works alongside it.
The Luxe tracks everyday activity, sleep, heart rate, respiration, and workouts. When we put it to the test, we were particularly impressed by its heart rate monitoring accuracy, which was on par with much more expensive running watches. Your daily data is presented on a super-sharp color AMOLED display, which offers lots of detail in a small space. That means less scrolling, which is always a win in our books.
The Luxe is also Fitbit’s best-looking fitness tracker, with a stainless steel case and buckle and a choice of either a soft silicone band or a gold-toned stainless steel bracelet. In our tests, wearing it all day and night was comfortable, allowing us to build a complete picture of our activity and sleeping habits.
Fitness trackers work best when worn daily to build a complete picture of your habits and lifestyle, and the Luxe is one that you’ll genuinely want. There’s no onboard GPS; instead, the Luxe needs a connection to your phone, which is its only real drawback. If that’s a deal-breaker, the slightly pricier Fitbit Charge 5 would be a better choice.
Huawei Band 3 Pro
This is one of the best fitness trackers you can get on a tight budget. It costs about the same as the Garmin Vivosport 4 below, and for how much it costs, it has many great features. The Huawei Band 3 Pro has GPS, making it a good outdoor activity choice. It can also be used in the pool because it is water-resistant and has a special mode for swimming.
In our tests, the color display was easy to read even in direct sunlight, so you can check your workout stats at a glance. The heart rate monitor also worked well, giving results similar to those of a much more expensive sports watch, which is great for interval training.
The GPS could be faster at locking on (in our experience, Garmin devices work better, probably because the company has been investing in location tracking for a long time). Still, once it did, it was accurate even in cities. The Band 3 Pro is a good choice if you want to start tracking your fitness but don’t want to spend much money on your first device.
Oura (Generation 3)
The Oura smart ring is a unique fitness tracker on your finger. It can measure your heart rate and blood oxygen saturation much more accurately than a device you wear on your wrist. The newest version, which came out in late 2021, has an improved optical heart rate sensor that tracks your pulse around the clock, so you can see exactly how it changes throughout the day.
Seven new sensors can track your skin temperature and tell you if it’s within normal limits. The algorithm for tracking sleep has also been improved without affecting the size or battery life of the watch. During our tests, we found it easy to use and show information in interesting ways, such as by showing restorative time. It’s great for getting a big-picture view of your health, but it’s not the right kind of tracker for dedicated workouts like runs and trips to the gym.
The main problem with the Oura smart ring is that it is expensive. The company also started a subscription service that costs money each month and gives users access to more tools and information. The only good thing is that when you buy the ring, you get six months free, and anyone upgrading from the second-generation version gets a free membership for life.
Fitbit Charge 5
The Fitbit Charge 5 is a fitness tracker that was made for people who go to the gym. It has GPS built-in, so you can track walks, runs, and bike rides without having to carry your phone. When it senses that you’re moving, it starts tracking them automatically. It also has modes for tracking a wide range of indoor activities, from weightlifting to spinning, and you can choose your five favorites so that you can get to them quickly with the touch of a finger. Again, that means you’ll spend less time scrolling and more time working out and having fun.
There is also an EDA (electrodermal activity) sensor, which measures how the activity of your adrenal glands changes the conductivity of your skin. It’s a new way to keep track of stress and was only available on the top-of-the-line Fitbit Sense.
The ECG app on the Charge 5 can watch for signs of atrial fibrillation. This used to only be possible on expensive smartwatches like the Apple Watch, so it’s great to see it on a cheap fitness tracker. This is topped off by a bright, clear color AMOLED screen, which is a huge step up from the Charge 4’s monochrome memory-in-pixel screen.
The Fitbit Charge 5 isn’t perfect—we miss being able to control our Spotify playlist from our wrists while working out—but it’s a great fitness tracker that you should think about if you’re starting to take your workouts more seriously.
The Amazfit Bip takes some design ideas from the Apple Watch, but it’s not a full-fledged smartwatch. Instead, it’s a fitness tracker. You won’t use it to manage your calendar or send emails, but it has many features, like GPS, an accurate heart rate tracker, multi-sport tracking, sleep tracking, and an estimated VO2 max, so you can keep track of your fitness over time.
It’s surprisingly cheap, but Amazfit didn’t skimp on the parts. It’s light and challenging, with a screen that stays on all the time and a long-lasting battery.
We also found it easy to use, giving the kind of detailed fitness data you’d expect from a device that costs much more. It’s not as sleek as a Fitbit, and during our tests, the auto-pause feature only sometimes worked as it should have, but that’s a minor problem made up for by the watch’s great performance in other areas.
Honor Band 5
The Honor Band 5 is one of the least expensive fitness trackers, but it still has many great features to keep an eye on your daily health and well-being. One of the most valuable features is sleep tracking, which keeps track of your sleep stages throughout the night and gives you tips on how to get the most out of your sleep time.
This step tracker gave almost the same results as a more expensive Fitbit device, and it has workout modes for walking, running, cycling, cross-training, rowing, and swimming. You won’t get as much information as you would from a Garmin device, but when you’re done, your time, distance, speed, and heart rate will be shown clearly in the mobile app.
As you might expect from a low-cost fitness tracker, there is no GPS to track your location while doing cardio outside. We also found that, compared to higher-end devices, its screen could have responded faster to taps and swipes, but it’s hard to complain at this price.
Garmin Venu Sq
The Venu Sq has all the same important sensors as its round sibling, the excellent Garmin Venu. It has a built-in GPS, a heart rate monitor, and a Pulse Ox (blood oxygen) sensor, which is very popular now. It has running, cycling, and swimming modes that make it a good sports tracking partner, but we found it a little slow to pick up a GPS signal.
It also has all of the features of a smartwatch. The music edition has a built-in music player; all versions can be used to make payments, download apps, and watch faces from Garmin’s Connect IQ store. What you miss out on from the main Venu is the more impressive AMOLED display, animated workouts you can follow on the watch, and an altimeter to track your elevation. If you don’t need those features, the Venu SQ should be a good smartwatch for sports if you can do without them.
Fitbit Inspire 3
The Fitbit Inspire 3 could be the best fitness tracker for you if you want healthier habits and need a device to help you. It’s not too complicated, but it has everything you need to stay active and motivated and is very easy to use.
If you’re doing something like boxing and need to cover your wrist, you can take it off the band and clip it to your clothes with a clip that you can buy separately. It will keep track of your activity and heart rate all day long, and the Active Zone Minutes will tell you how active you are on an average day or week.
It will also give you haptic feedback when you reach your goals and has an updated set of sensors. There are more than 20 workout modes; some will start tracking automatically as soon as the fitness tracker notices that you’ve started moving around.
All your data is stored in the easy-to-use Fitbit app, where you can see trends over time, set new goals, and even get six months of Fitbit Premium for free. The Inspire 3 is cheap, easy to use, and great for beginners. It doesn’t have a GPS, so you can’t use it to plan runs.
