This week on America’s Got Talent, the stage buzzed with anticipation as the Birmingham Youth & Young Adult Fellowship Choir made their long-awaited debut. After ten years of hard work and dedication, this talented group was about to shine in front of judges Simon Cowell, Mel B, Howie Mandel, and Sofia Vergara.
“This is our big moment,” declared Ahkeem Lee, the choir’s director, rallying his singers before they took the stage. The excitement was palpable as they endeavored to put Birmingham, AL, on the map.
And they certainly did. With an uplifting rendition of “Joy,” the choir not only filled the auditorium with vibrant music but also won Simon’s coveted Golden Buzzer, sending them directly to the Live Shows.
Ahkeem shared the choir’s inspiring story with the judges, revealing that it all started when he was just 18. “We organized a school supply concert to benefit children in the community. But after that, so many youths wanted to join that I had to keep it going.” His passion breathed life into this thriving choir, which has grown significantly over the past decade.
In his moving commentary, Ahkeem highlighted Birmingham’s rich history and resilience. “We come from a city that’s often overlooked,” he stated. “But Birmingham has so much talent. I grew up near the historic 16th Street Baptist Church, known for a tragic bombing in 1963 that significantly impacted the Civil Rights Movement. Now, 60 years later, we’re here to show the world that our city has something beautiful to offer.”
The emotional journey resonated deeply with both the audience and the judges. “That was big,” Simon remarked after their performance. “I could see how much work went into this. Every single one of you played the perfect part.” Recognizing their collective effort, he pressed the Golden Buzzer, solidifying their place as a standout act this season.
Backstage, Simon reinforced their success as just the beginning, saying, “You’re big, and now it’s going to get bigger.” The choir’s infectious energy and positive message of community service promise to leave a lasting impact on viewers as America’s Got Talent continues to air Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT, with episodes available the next day on Peacock.
