In the last two days, talk has not stopped about the city of Solidar, located in north-eastern Ukraine, against which Russia has launched an attack defined as the most ferocious since the beginning of its military operation on the territory of its neighbor Lo last February.
Where does the importance of this region lie and why is Moscow so focused on it?
On a strategic supply line between Donetsk and Luhansk regions in the Donbass region is located “Bakhmut”, around which Russian forces are fighting fierce battles, especially in its southern flank and eastern regions.
Britain confirms Russian control over the city
Perhaps Russian attention is basically focused on “Bakhmut” and not Solidar, but Russian forces resorted to controlling the small town through the cities of Kramanorsk and Sloviansk to close in on Solidar and reach Bakhmut.
A tale step on the ground would put the Ukrainian forces in a very critical situation, because the high hills of Solidar overlook all Ukrainian supply lines as well as lines of communication.
And just in case in controlled, it becomes much easier to encircle Bakhmut from the north, thus cutting off supply lines to Ukraine.
As a result, Ukrainian forces announced that their Russian counterparts had bombed Solidar more than 86 times in 24 hours with heavy artillery.
As Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed, his forces are fighting the fiercest battle there.
While the head of the Russian private military Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, announced that the importance of Solidar lies in the presence of mining tunnels inside it, which are galleries that extend underground and can house soldiers and tanks.
Latest developments in the field
As for the new developments on the ground, the pro-Moscow interim Donetsk presidency Denis Prishilin announced on Tuesday that Russian forces have taken control of the Solidar city center in eastern Ukraine and pushed forces Ukrainians in the western rear of the city.
Meanwhile, Wagner’s forces controlled the southern suburbs of Solidar, beyond the Krasnaya Gora region.
This comes as battles still rage between the “Wagner” forces and the Ukrainian army, west of the city, while Russian forces have surrounded the Ukrainian fighters in pockets of the city to the west.
In addition, the Ukrainian General Staff issued a statement on the situation, in which indicated that Russian forces continue their operations offensive towards Bakhmut, Avdeev and Liman in an attempt to improve the tactical position towards Kobian.
He added that the Russians regrouped, brought up manpower, transferred units offensive additions, changed tactics and launched assaults there.
Russian maneuver at Bakhmut
He also clarified that Russia has deployed a large number of units offensive composed of the best reserves of the Wagner Group.
Interestingly, Solidar is located in the Donetsk region, about 15 kilometers from the city of Bakhmut, which before the war had 70,000 inhabitants and has now become a center of fighting.
