According to military information from Al-Arabiya / Al-Hadath, that coup attempt took place at dawn by Armored Corps officers, taking advantage of recent events in the country. in especially the unrest in the east.

The sources also indicated that a number of officers (estimated in more than 20), led by Major General Abdel-Baqi Bakrawi, took control of the armored body of the Sudanese army, before being arrested, adding that the headquarters is still under siege.

Furthermore, he indicated that the coup leaders planned the arrest of the members of the Sovereign Council and the Military Council, provided that the coup process started from more than one point.

A high-level government source also confirmed to AFP that the perpetrators of the operation tried to seize the headquarters of the media officers, but “have failed”. Another official source told Reuters that the coup attempt included efforts to control Omdurman Radio, which is located across the Nile across from the capital, Khartoum.

At the same time, Muhammad al-Faki Suleiman, member of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council and official spokesperson for the Council, appealed to all Sudanese to defend the country. “Stand up to defend your country and protect the transition,” he said in a comment on his Facebook account.

However, he went back and added in a subsequent comment: “Things are under control and the revolution is victorious”. Then he confirmed that interrogations of suspects in the coup attempt will begin shortly, adding that a statement from the army would soon be released.

Protests in eastern Sudan
