X (Formerly Twitter) Faces Widespread Outage, Impacting Users Worldwide

Social Media Platform X, previously known as Twitter, experienced a significant global outage that impacted users across various countries, including the US, Canada, and India. The outage, which occurred on Thursday, lasted about an hour and left users unable to access their regular posts or timelines. Instead, they were greeted with a default message welcoming them to X.

The disruption was extensively reported on DownDetector, a website that tracks web outages. This site recorded a surge in outage reports around 12:40 a.m. ET on Thursday. The issues were reported on both X’s app and website, with over 74,000 reports coming from the US and nearly 7,000 from the UK. DownDetector compiles outage data from user-submitted reports and other sources, including Twitter.

X, currently owned by Elon Musk, who purchased the former Twitter for $44 billion last year, has undergone several significant changes under his leadership. These changes include a rebranding to X, staff reductions, modifications to moderation and verification policies, and the reinstatement of previously banned accounts. Since Musk’s acquisition, there has been a noticeable decline in the company’s advertising revenue, which had been a major source of income for the platform.

At the time of the outage, X did not immediately respond to requests for comments.

X, as a social media service, enables users to share text, photos, and videos in the form of “posts,” previously known as tweets, with their followers. The platform has been navigating through various transformations since its acquisition and rebranding.
