YouTube to Discontinue Overlay Ads Next Month

Fewer ads on YouTube are something you see only sometimes. At least there will be fewer types of ads. In its most recent forum post, YouTube said it would stop putting “Overlay ads” on YouTube videos. These old-fashioned banner ads pop up over the video player and block your view of whatever you are trying to watch.

YouTube says that the ads will be gone on April 6 because they are an “old ad format.” The company said that the ads only worked on desktops and that they “bother viewers.” Now, the only ads that will show up in the video player are video ads that can play before, during, or after a video. Pop-up ads that say “view product” are also allowed; banner ads will still be on the list of recommended videos.

The company says it expects “limited impact for most Creators as engagement shifts to other ad formats.” People don’t like ads, but creators often get paid if certain ad thresholds are met. Advertisers could choose only to pay when a user clicked on the ad, so there was a good chance that nobody was getting paid from these pop-ups. People who click the “skip” button on video ads are not paid.
