Apple officially released iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 on September 14, 2026, marking a significant transition for the company’s virtual assistant. The update introduces “Siri AI,” a rebuilt version of the service designed to move beyond basic voice commands into a tool capable of onscreen awareness and deep personal context understanding.
For the first time, Siri can process information across a user’s entire device ecosystem, searching through emails, text messages, and photo metadata to answer complex queries. This shift allows the assistant to perform tasks like finding a specific flight confirmation mentioned in a thread from weeks ago or identifying a person in a photo based on a description in a calendar invite.
Hardware Requirements and the Siri Waitlist
The new Siri AI features are computationally intensive and require specific hardware to function. Apple has restricted these capabilities to the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and all models within the iPhone 16, 17, and 18 series. Users with older devices will still receive the standard iOS 27 security and system updates but will not have access to the rebuilt AI assistant.
Even for those with compatible hardware, activation is not immediate. After installing the update, users must navigate to the Settings app to join a dedicated waitlist. While official documentation highlights Apple’s proprietary foundation models, industry reports suggest some aspects of the service may utilize technology from Google Gemini.
Interface Overhaul: Liquid Glass
iOS 27 accompanies the AI update with a visual redesign dubbed “Liquid Glass.” This aesthetic includes a new system-wide opacity and tint slider, allowing users to customize the transparency of the interface. Siri itself has been redesigned to consume the Dynamic Island when active, providing a more integrated visual feedback loop than the previous floating orb.
Regional Availability and Photo Tools
Despite the global launch of iOS 27, Siri AI is notably absent in the European Union and China. This unavailability stems from ongoing regulatory and privacy negotiations in those regions.
The update also brings AI-driven enhancements to the Photos app. Two new tools, “Spatial Reframe” and “Extend,” allow users to manipulate the composition of their images after they are taken. Spatial Reframe uses generative filling to adjust the perspective of a shot, while Extend can broaden the field of view by synthesizing the edges of a photograph.
