Snap Launches $2,195 Specs AR Glasses with Anticipatory AI

Snap officially launched its consumer-grade augmented reality (AR) glasses on September 16, 2026, rebranding the hardware simply as “Specs.” The move marks a significant transition from the previous generation’s developer-only rental model to a retail product priced at $2,195. The new device represents Snap’s most aggressive attempt to move computing from smartphones to a “spatial” interface integrated into daily wear.

The hardware features a dual Snapdragon processor architecture designed to balance the heavy lifting of AR rendering with real-time computer vision. One chip is dedicated solely to environmental sensing and tracking, while the other handles the display of digital Lenses. This configuration supports a 51-degree field of view (FOV), providing a 30% larger display area compared to the fifth-generation developer units. Users can interact with the digital interface via hand gestures and voice commands, with the glasses capable of displaying 16 million colors.

Hardware Specifications and Wearability

Specs are available in two sizes: a 47mm variant weighing 132 grams and a 52mm variant weighing 136 grams. While substantially heavier than standard 30-gram eyewear, Snap has utilized the frame’s bulk to house a battery that provides approximately four hours of active AR use. An included charging case extends total runtime to 20 hours. For outdoor use, the glasses feature electrochromic lenses that can transition from clear to fully tinted in approximately 10 seconds, allowing for better visibility of digital overlays in bright sunlight.

Unlike previous iterations that were often viewed as prototypes, Snap is positioning the $2,195 Specs as a standalone computer capable of surfacing information contextually.

“Specs Intelligence” and AI Integration

A core component of the new operating system is “Specs Intelligence,” an anticipatory AI service. Rather than waiting for specific user prompts, the software attempts to build a private context profile to offer proactive assistance. This layer integrates with third-party large language models, including OpenAI’s GPT series and Google Gemini, to process visual and audio information from the wearer’s environment.

By leveraging these AI integrations, the glasses can identify objects, translate text in real-time, or provide navigation cues based on what the wearer is looking at. Snap has emphasized that this data is designed to be personal and context-aware, aiming to reduce the friction of manual digital searches. While the device can function independently of a smartphone, its ecosystem is heavily reliant on the “Spatial Engine” software, which developers are using to build persistent digital objects that remain anchored in physical locations across multiple sessions.
