Genre Highlights: Thrillers and Heists
Among the most anticipated titles in this year’s selection is 5 More Minutes (5 más minutos), directed by Javier Ruiz Caldera. The film is a time-loop thriller featuring Javier Cámara and Berto Romero. Its inclusion marks a visible trend toward genre-heavy storytelling within the region’s output.
Another standout is Mikel Gurrea’s Saints (Sants). Described as a singular heist drama, the film follows a woman who joins a group specializing in the theft of religious figures. The project highlights the integration of Catalan production houses with international partners, involving Italy’s Kino Produzioni to bring the narrative to the screen.

To celebrate the record regional presence, Catalan Films—the internationalization arm of the ICEC—is hosting a networking event on September 20, 2026. The gathering is expected to be attended by Culture Minister Sònia Hernández Almodóvar and a contingent of regional producers and creators.
The 2026 festival lineup also pays tribute to the region’s cinematic history with Life is Verdi (La vida és Verdi), a film celebrating the centenary of Barcelona’s iconic Verdi Cinemas.
