CBS has officially scheduled the premiere of NCIS Season 24 for Tuesday, October 6, 2026. While the milestone season brings the highly anticipated return of Michael Weatherly as Tony DiNozzo Jr., it also confirms the scenario many long-time viewers hoped to avoid: a significant narrative separation between the show’s most iconic couple.
The premiere episode, titled “Wayward Son,” marks the beginning of a season-long arc for Weatherly. However, despite the actor’s return to the flagship series, Cote de Pablo will not appear as Ziva David in Season 24. This confirmation effectively ends speculation that the “Tiva” pairing would reunite on screen following the recent shift in the franchise’s trajectory.

The End of the Tony & Ziva Spinoff
The decision to bring DiNozzo back to the main series alone follows the cancellation of the Paramount+ spinoff, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, which was discontinued in December 2025 after a single season. The spinoff was originally intended to explore the couple’s lives in Europe, but its conclusion has forced the flagship writers to find a new path for DiNozzo in Washington, D.C.
According to official details regarding NCIS Season 24, Tony DiNozzo returns to the Navy Yard not as an agent, but as the head of a private security firm called Salus Mondiale. He arrives in the capital to open a new satellite office for the company, providing a professional justification for his presence while Ziva remains elsewhere.
How the Series Explains Ziva’s Absence
To maintain narrative continuity without de Pablo’s physical presence, showrunner Steven D. Binder has established a specific off-screen location for Ziva David. Binder explained that Ziva is currently “helicopter parenting” the couple’s daughter, Tali, who is attending a boarding school located a few hours away from Washington. This allows the characters to remain a couple in the show’s canon while explaining why Tony is operating independently in D.C.
This development has been met with mixed emotions from the fanbase. While the return of Michael Weatherly’s signature wit and “Very Special Agent” energy provides a nostalgic boost to the long-running procedural, the off-screen status of Ziva David serves as a reminder of the canceled spinoff’s unfulfilled potential. For now, the “Tiva” relationship will be sustained through dialogue and mentions rather than the on-screen chemistry that defined their original run.
Beyond the flagship series, the NCIS universe continues to expand elsewhere. Mark Harmon is confirmed to continue his involvement in the prequel series NCIS: Origins, which is currently moving into its third season, focusing on the early career of Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
