Why Slow Horses Season 6 Skipped the Joe Country Wales Setting to Merge Two Books

The sixth season of Apple TV+’s espionage drama Slow Horses has officially broken its established pattern of adapting one book per season. Premiering on September 16, 2026, the current season marks the first time the series has merged two of Mick Herron’s novels—Joe Country and Slough House—into a single six-episode arc.

This structural shift has resulted in the removal of a major setting from the source material: the rural, snow-covered landscape of Wales. While the novel Joe Country is defined by a high-stakes “field trip” to the Welsh countryside, the television adaptation has opted to keep its cast of disgraced spies closer to their London base.

Conceptual contrast between a snowy mountain and a rainy London street.
The production opted for an urban-centric approach over the novel's original rural Wales setting.

Why the Wales Setting Was Scrapped

The decision to bypass the rural setting was driven by the narrative needs of the show’s ensemble cast. Director Adam Randall explained that while the Wales plotline works effectively on the page, it posed a significant problem for the show’s most prominent figures. In the original book, characters like Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) and Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) have relatively little to do during the countryside sequence.

By combining the two novels, the production ensures that the show’s heavy hitters remain central to the action throughout the season. Randall noted that the merger was necessary to provide sufficient story for the entire cast rather than isolating a few characters in a remote location while others remained sidelined in London.

Actor Christopher Chung, who plays Roddy Ho, confirmed that the cast had initially anticipated a change of scenery. Chung noted that there was internal discussion about a “Slow Horses field trip” to film in the snow, but those plans were ultimately scrapped in favor of the current urban-centric approach. At one point, the production even considered filming in a Scandinavian country to replicate the book’s wintry atmosphere before deciding against it.

Significant Departures from the Books

The change in location is not the only major deviation fans have noticed in Season 6. The series has also accelerated or altered key character arcs that differ substantially from Mick Herron’s timeline.

The most notable shift is the return of Olivia Cooke as Sid Baker. Absent since the first season, her reappearance provides an emotional weight and a narrative pivot that does not occur at this stage in the novels. Additionally, the series has introduced Lenny Rush as Reece Nesmith, a character who has undergone significant changes from his literary counterpart to better suit the television adaptation’s tone and casting.

These changes suggest that while the show remains faithful to the spirit of Herron’s work, the writers are increasingly willing to reorganize the “Slough House” universe to maintain the momentum of the television format. The search for River Cartwright’s father, Frank Harkness, remains a driving force, but it is now unfolding against the backdrop of the combined events of two books rather than a isolated rural excursion.

Slow Horses Season 6 is currently airing weekly, with the season finale scheduled for October 21, 2026. Production for Season 7 is expected to begin in October 2026, continuing the rapid pace of the series’ release schedule.
