OpenAI has transitioned ChatGPT from a text-based chatbot into a dynamic application generator with the launch of its “Intelligent UI” on October 7, 2026. This update allows the AI to populate its responses with interactive diagrams, charts, tappable buttons, and functional widgets that behave like native software rather than simple prose.
The feature is rolling out alongside the new GPT-6 models. Paid subscribers on the Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers are receiving the flagship GPT-6 Sol variant immediately. Users on the Free and Go tiers are scheduled to begin receiving GPT-6 Luna, a conversation-tuned model designed for the free tier, on October 8.

The shift to an Intelligent UI enables GPT-6 to create functional tools on demand. Instead of providing instructions for a task, the model can generate the tool itself—such as a real-time bill splitter, a savings calculator, or small interactive games—directly within the chat interface. These elements are powered by a library of native components and a real-time compiler that processes the interface as the model generates its response.
Streaming Thinking and Faster Responses
One of the primary technical advancements supporting this update is a “streaming thinking” capability. In previous versions, users often had to wait for a reasoning model to complete its entire thought process before seeing an output. With GPT-6, the model can begin rendering text and interactive diagrams while the reasoning phase is still in progress.
This architectural change allows for more complex, multi-layered visual data. For example, when asked about mechanical systems, the AI can produce an interactive breakdown of a 7-speed bicycle. Users can tap specific buttons to highlight different gear systems or mechanical parts, which then updates the visual in real-time. In a more domestic context, the model can generate a Sunday roast planner that includes a dynamic guest-count slider; as the user adjusts the number of guests, the AI automatically recalculates and updates the shopping quantities in a visible table.
User Control and Customization
The Intelligent UI is designed to be adaptive. While the model defaults to the most helpful format—whether that is a chart for financial data or a form for data entry—users maintain control over the presentation. If the AI defaults to a text-heavy response, users can manually request a UI build.
This update is widely viewed as a move to compete with the broader “app-ification” of AI interfaces, providing a more structured way to interact with large language models. While it shares some DNA with the previous “Canvas” feature, the Intelligent UI is a more integrated system, weaving interactive components directly into the flow of conversation rather than opening a separate workspace.
