Overwatch 2 Update 4.38 Patch Notes: Season 5 Doctrine & Sombra Support Rework

Overwatch 2 Season 5, titled “A Grim Doctrine,” launched on October 6, 2026, introducing the new Support hero Doctrine and a fundamental role swap for Sombra. This update marks a significant shift in the seasonal cycle, bringing Hero 54 to the roster alongside substantial reworks for existing characters.

New Support Hero: Doctrine

Doctrine joins the roster as the 54th hero. His kit revolves around the Eternal Scepter, a dual-purpose tool used for both healing allies and damaging enemies. His primary utility comes from the Infuse ability, which allows him to buff the properties of his next skill use.

Sombra and Roadhog Reworks

The most dramatic change in Season 5 is Sombra’s transition from the Damage role to the Support role. This shift includes the removal of her iconic Hack ability, which has been replaced with a Weaken status effect.

Roadhog has also received a significant kit overhaul to improve his presence as a Tank:

  • Scrap Gun: Now fires two distinct bursts per volley.
  • Trash Compactor: A new ability that allows Roadhog to absorb incoming projectiles and return them toward enemies.

New Map: Watchpoint: Grímsvötn

Season 5 introduces Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, an Escort map set within an Icelandic volcanic fissure. Players must navigate through the geothermal facility while pushing the payload across volatile terrain.

Shadow Monarch Collaboration and Events

From October 6 through late October, players can participate in the Overwatch x Shadow Monarch crossover. This collaboration features themed cosmetics, most notably a skin for Genji portraying him as Sung Jinwoo. The event is scheduled to conclude between October 19 and October 26, 2026.

Unvaulted Battle Passes

Blizzard has introduced a new progression feature called Unvaulted Battle Passes. This system allows players to select and progress through legacy content from Seasons 1 to 15 simultaneously with the current Season 5 pass. This change is intended to let players earn older rewards they may have missed.

The update is currently live across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. Detailed technical adjustments can be found on the official Blizzard Forums.
