Apple Schedules October 13 Event for New homeOS Hub and Hardware Refreshes

Apple has officially scheduled a special event for Tuesday, October 13, 2026, marking a significant expansion into the smart home market. Teased by marketing chief Greg Joswiak with the tagline “Welcome home,” the presentation is set to take place at 9:00 AM ET. The event will be hosted from a private “Apple Experience” house in Tribeca, New York, rather than the traditional Steve Jobs Theater, signaling a shift toward real-world product demonstrations.

This launch represents the first major new product category debut under the leadership of CEO John Ternus. Central to the announcement is the expected unveiling of a new operating system, “homeOS,” designed to unify Apple’s ecosystem of domestic hardware through a display-driven, AI-first interface.

The flagship hardware for this event is reported to be a 6-inch square smart home hub, currently codenamed J490. According to 9to5Mac, this device is designed to serve as a central command station for HomeKit-enabled accessories. The hub reportedly features a design inspired by the classic iMac G4, utilizing a hemispherical speaker base connected to the display via a polished metal arm.

To support the advanced processing required for Apple Intelligence, the hub is expected to utilize an A18-series chip. This hardware enables the device to use built-in sensors and cameras to recognize individual household members, allowing it to tailor screen content and music preferences automatically as people move through a room.

Beyond the new hub, Apple is expected to refresh several existing products to align with its new smart home strategy:

  • Apple TV 4K: A new iteration is anticipated to feature the A19-series chip and support for Wi-Fi 7, improving its role as a high-speed home hub for streaming and gaming.
  • HomePod mini 2: The compact speaker is expected to receive internal hardware upgrades to better support Siri AI features, alongside new color options including pink and green.

The October 13 event establishes the foundation for a multi-year roadmap. While the J490 hub focuses on a stationary tabletop or wall-mounted experience, Apple is also reportedly developing a higher-end robotic device (codenamed J595). That unit, which is expected to feature a larger 9-inch display mounted on a motorized robotic arm, is currently slated for a 2027 release.

The shift toward homeOS suggests Apple is moving away from the “accessory” model of the smart home, where speakers and TV boxes were secondary to the iPhone. Instead, the company appears to be positioning these devices as independent “Apple Intelligence” nodes that can manage a household autonomously. This transition is expected to be a primary focus of the Tribeca demonstrations, highlighting how the new hardware integrates with the broader Apple ecosystem of services and security.
