Bright Minds Season 7 to Film in Tokyo Following Franco-Japanese Production Deal

The international French crime sensation Bright Minds (originally titled Astrid et Raphaëlle) is expanding its reach to Japan for its seventh season. This upcoming installment marks a landmark co-production between France’s JLA Productions and the Japanese public broadcaster NHK Enterprises, moving the series’ investigative backdrop from the streets of Paris to Tokyo.

France TV Distribution facilitated the deal, which officially brings the hit series to Japan for a specialized narrative arc. The move follows the show’s massive domestic success, where it recorded 24 million video views on the france.tv platform throughout 2025, making it the top-performing fiction title on the service.

High Stakes in Paris and Tokyo

Season 7 will consist of eight episodes, each running 52 minutes. While the series has traditionally been rooted in the French capital, the new production agreement allows for a significant narrative shift as the leads navigate investigations that bridge the two cultures. This co-production represents a deeper level of collaboration than a standard broadcast deal, with NHK Enterprises taking an active role in the production alongside JLA Productions.

The storyline for the new season introduces severe challenges for both protagonists. Astrid Nielsen, the brilliant criminologist with autism, faces a professional crisis as her department—the criminal police archives—is threatened with permanent closure. Simultaneously, her partner, Commander Raphaëlle Coste, is grappling with a loss of mobility, a physical consequence resulting from a previous poisoning incident.

Global Expansion and Remakes

The transition to Tokyo underscores the growing global footprint of the French procedural. Beyond its original run, the franchise is currently being adapted for English-speaking audiences. An English-language remake titled Patience is in production by Eagle Eye Drama, destined for PBS in the United States. This remake follows the same core dynamic of a forensic archivist and a police detective solving complex cases.

The seventh season of Bright Minds is expected to maintain its signature blend of intricate puzzle-solving and character-driven drama, now enhanced by the logistical and cultural scale of the Japanese partnership. By integrating Tokyo directly into the plot, the series continues to evolve from a local French hit into a truly international property.
