Terry Matalas Reveals Patrick Stewart’s Vision for Picard in Star Trek: Legacy

Terry Matalas, the creative force behind the third season of Star Trek: Picard, has revealed that Patrick Stewart was fully committed to the proposed spinoff Star Trek: Legacy. According to Matalas, Stewart had proactively pitched a specific way for Jean-Luc Picard to return to the screen that would have seen the legendary Admiral take a backseat to a new generation of officers.

Speaking on the Dropping Names… And Other Things podcast in October 2026, Matalas shared that Stewart was “all in” on the project. Rather than reclaiming the center stage as the series lead, Stewart reportedly envisioned Picard as a recurring, peripheral figure. His pitch positioned the character as a consultant or mentor, allowing the narrative to focus on the established crew of the Enterprise-G while maintaining a tether to the franchise’s history.

The proposed Star Trek: Legacy series was designed to pick up where the Picard finale left off, centering on Captain Seven of Nine and a bridge crew that included Jack Crusher and the daughters of Geordi La Forge. This “pass the torch” approach was intended to bridge the gap between the The Next Generation era and the future of the 24th-century timeline.

While live-action plans are paused, the Enterprise-G adventures continue in other media formats.

Despite Stewart’s enthusiasm and the clear narrative roadmap, Star Trek: Legacy has yet to receive a green light from Paramount. The production landscape for the franchise has shifted significantly following the merger with Skydance. Reports indicate that the new leadership is evaluating a pivot in the franchise’s direction, leaving the immediate future of the Enterprise-G crew in a state of uncertainty.

The timing of these revelations coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise in October 2026, a milestone marked by the release of the documentary The Sixty-Year Mission. While fans continue to campaign for a television continuation of the Picard storyline, the narrative is currently living on through other media. IDW Publishing launched a flagship Star Trek comic series in late 2026 that serves as the de facto continuation of Seven of Nine’s adventures aboard the Enterprise-G.

Further complicating the timeline for a potential live-action series is the current schedule of Matalas himself. He is presently serving as the showrunner for Marvel Television’s VisionQuest, which premiered in October 2026. While the creative team and leading talent remain interested in returning to the bridge, the corporate transition at Paramount suggests that any official return to the Legacy timeline may remain on hold as the studio defines its broader strategy for the next decade of the franchise.
