Research-only comparison, updated 15 October 2026. Antivirus software protects devices against malicious code, phishing sites and ransomware behavior; it is not interchangeable with a VPN, password manager, cloud backup or identity-theft insurance. This guide compares eight released consumer options, not unreleased editions or enterprise endpoint contracts. We did not install, benchmark or personally test these products. Vendor prices and feature claims are identified separately from independent lab evidence.
Quick verdict: Bitdefender Total Security is the broad paid protection pick; Norton 360 Deluxe is compelling for families using its bundled backup and parental controls; Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the strongest no-extra-subscription starting point for Windows 11. McAfee, ESET, Malwarebytes, Trend Micro and Avast serve different priorities, especially scam prevention, configurability and plan simplicity.
Our research methodology: a transparent weighted rubric
We assessed products using independent protection evidence (30%), phishing/ransomware defenses (20%), platform and device fit (15%), full-term pricing and renewal transparency (15%), privacy and telemetry controls (10%), and support/usability (10%). These are editorial decision weights, not results from our own lab. We do not assign invented numerical scores to products. A laboratory result for a different edition is explicitly marked rather than transferred to the plan being sold.
The strongest directly comparable source available at the research cutoff is AV-TEST’s July–August 2026 Windows 11 home-user evaluation (15 products, default settings, continuously updated versions; published August 2026). Its three categories—protection, performance and usability—each max out at six points. A 6/6/6 result is a lab result for that tested Windows version, not a promise of perfect future security or the result for a Mac/iPhone edition.
We also used AV-Comparatives’ July–August 2026 Windows 11 real-world factsheet, released 11 September 2026, covering 200 malicious URLs and false alarms. It is an interim two-month result, not the unreleased November full four-month report. The exact product and edition tested may differ from the consumer package discussed here. Independent professional context includes TechRadar’s October 2026 antivirus comparison; its reviewer observations are not our own testing.
At-a-glance comparison: first term versus renewal
| Pick | Selected product / plan | Price reference and billing caution | Primary fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| P001 | Bitdefender Total Security Individual | US$59.99 for the first annual term, five devices on the US vendor page; renewal amount is not fixed by that introductory listing. | Best all-around paid protection for mixed-device households |
| P002 | Norton 360 Deluxe | US$49.99 first year for five devices; US renewal list effective March 2026 specifies US$124.99/year. This is a steep promotional-to-renewal increase. | Best for families wanting backup, VPN and parental features |
| P003 | McAfee Total Protection Essential | The official US campaign displayed Essential at US$39.99 first year for five devices against a US$119.99 list reference; other McAfee regional pages display different offers. Confirm the actual cart, renewal notice and contract length. | Best for people who value bundled web and identity tools |
| P004 | ESET HOME Security Premium 2026 Edition | ESET’s US product page confirms a 2026 Premium edition and first-term-only pricing, but does not expose a stable numeric US checkout amount in the public page we could verify. A third-party US retailer listed a three-device one-year key card at US$49.99; this is RETAILER PRICING, not an official vendor checkout quote. | Best for configurable protection and experienced Windows users |
| P005 | Malwarebytes Standard (Premium Security engine) | Official current Standard pricing is dynamically rendered and was not numerically verifiable; it specifies three devices for the Standard bundle. A third-party March 2026 reference cited US$44.99/year for a one-device Premium plan, so that number is HISTORICAL/PROVISIONAL and must not be presented as the live three-device price. | Best for straightforward malware and scam-focused protection |
| P006 | Trend Micro Maximum Security | The official US shop showed US$74.95 for a 12-month term against US$104.95 RRP, with a separate coupon potentially reducing checkout to US$54.95. Promotional coupons are conditional; renewal is at the then-current rate, not guaranteed to remain US$74.95. | Best for anti-scam, banking and web-shopping safeguards |
| P007 | Avast One Gold | Avast’s official US Avast One page advertised Gold from US$6.99/month; the word ‘from’ means billing interval, region, and introductory eligibility must be checked in the cart. Basic is free. | Best paid upgrade path from a capable free security baseline |
| P008 | Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Windows Security) | Included with supported Windows 11 installations; no separate Defender Antivirus subscription is required. Microsoft 365’s separate cross-device Defender app and enterprise Defender products are not the same entitlement. | Best no-extra-cost Windows 11 baseline |
Price interpretation: USD references use US-facing vendor pages unless otherwise stated. Introductory offers are not renewal quotes. Local taxes, payment currency, device caps, coupons and trial-to-paid conversions can change the total. Any price that could not be checked against a live vendor checkout is labeled provisional; no unsupported dollar value is filled in.
P001 — Bitdefender Total Security Individual
Best for: Best all-around paid protection for mixed-device households.
Verified plan and total-cost caveat
US$59.99 for the first annual term, five devices on the US vendor page; renewal amount is not fixed by that introductory listing.
Independent protection evidence, precisely scoped
AV-TEST August 2026 evaluated Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 on Windows 11 and reported 6/6 protection, 6/6 performance and 6/6 usability.
What the product actually adds
A unified plan covers Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, with multilayer malware and ransomware defenses, web threat blocking, parental tools and account-based management. Windows users receive the fullest endpoint controls; a mobile iOS app cannot perform unrestricted system-wide file scanning.
Limits, privacy and device caveats
Do not assume the included VPN equals a standalone unlimited VPN subscription. Check its traffic allowance and any upsell before treating it as a VPN replacement. Password-manager entitlement and premium extras may depend on current plan packaging. Review telemetry, cloud scanning and renewal terms before enabling automatic billing.
Editorial recommendation
Choose it when malware defense is the primary purchase and a household wants broad device coverage without paying primarily for identity-theft insurance.
Vendor source: Bitdefender Total Security Individual product and plan information. Cross-check the exact regional checkout before payment.
P002 — Norton 360 Deluxe
Best for: Best for families wanting backup, VPN and parental features.
Verified plan and total-cost caveat
US$49.99 first year for five devices; US renewal list effective March 2026 specifies US$124.99/year. This is a steep promotional-to-renewal increase.
Independent protection evidence, precisely scoped
AV-TEST August 2026 tested Norton 360 versions 26.6/26.7 on Windows 11, reporting 6/6/6 across protection, performance and usability.
What the product actually adds
Includes device malware protection, VPN, password manager, 50 GB cloud backup, dark-web monitoring, parental controls and scam warnings. The backup benefit is particularly useful for Windows PCs when configured and periodically restored in a test.
Limits, privacy and device caveats
50 GB backup is not a substitute for an independently verified 3-2-1 backup strategy. Parental-control and cloud-backup features differ by platform. Identity and scam protection has regional eligibility conditions; not every advertised feature works on macOS or iOS. The first-year deal is not the lifetime price.
Editorial recommendation
Good for a family prepared to use the extras and to compare the second-year bill against separate VPN and backup subscriptions.
Vendor source: Norton 360 Deluxe product and plan information. Cross-check the exact regional checkout before payment.
P003 — McAfee Total Protection Essential
Best for: Best for people who value bundled web and identity tools.
Verified plan and total-cost caveat
The official US campaign displayed Essential at US$39.99 first year for five devices against a US$119.99 list reference; other McAfee regional pages display different offers. Confirm the actual cart, renewal notice and contract length.
Independent protection evidence, precisely scoped
AV-TEST August 2026 evaluated McAfee Total Protection 1.39 on Windows 11 and awarded 6/6/6 in its three categories.
What the product actually adds
A single subscription can combine antivirus, web protection, scam screening, firewall, identity alerts, VPN and password manager. The five-device Essential option targets households that do not need unlimited-device tiers.
Limits, privacy and device caveats
A bundled password vault and VPN are separate purchase decisions: check export, VPN privacy policies and country restrictions before migrating credentials. Device security on iPhone is not the same as unrestricted antivirus scanning on Windows. McAfee’s dynamically changing regional promotions can make renewal cost and precise inclusions difficult to compare.
Editorial recommendation
Consider if you will actually use the included scam and privacy tools; otherwise a simpler security plan may be easier to audit.
Vendor source: McAfee Total Protection Essential product and plan information. Cross-check the exact regional checkout before payment.
P004 — ESET HOME Security Premium 2026 Edition
Best for: Best for configurable protection and experienced Windows users.
Verified plan and total-cost caveat
ESET’s US product page confirms a 2026 Premium edition and first-term-only pricing, but does not expose a stable numeric US checkout amount in the public page we could verify. A third-party US retailer listed a three-device one-year key card at US$49.99; this is RETAILER PRICING, not an official vendor checkout quote.
Independent protection evidence, precisely scoped
AV-TEST August 2026 tested ESET Security Ultimate 19.1/19.2 at 6/6/6 on Windows 11. That is a different tier from HOME Security Premium: the result cannot be represented as a direct Premium-plan laboratory score.
What the product actually adds
ESET’s home lineup emphasizes layered endpoint protection, banking protection, device management and anti-ransomware controls. Its Windows-focused options may appeal to users who want to inspect detailed security settings and exceptions.
Limits, privacy and device caveats
Confirm whether the chosen tier includes encryption, VPN and other extras rather than assuming the top-tier feature grid applies to Premium. Exact feature availability differs across Windows, Mac and Android; iOS restrictions are greater. The vendor’s own renewal amount requires checkout verification. A retailer key-card promotion may have separate region and activation conditions.
Editorial recommendation
A fit for security-conscious users willing to compare edition-specific feature matrices rather than buying on the strength of a higher-tier lab result.
Vendor source: ESET HOME Security Premium 2026 Edition product and plan information. Cross-check the exact regional checkout before payment.
P005 — Malwarebytes Standard (Premium Security engine)
Best for: Best for straightforward malware and scam-focused protection.
Verified plan and total-cost caveat
Official current Standard pricing is dynamically rendered and was not numerically verifiable; it specifies three devices for the Standard bundle. A third-party March 2026 reference cited US$44.99/year for a one-device Premium plan, so that number is HISTORICAL/PROVISIONAL and must not be presented as the live three-device price.
Independent protection evidence, precisely scoped
AV-TEST August 2026 tested Malwarebytes Premium versions 5.5/5.6 on Windows 11 at 6/6/6. The lab tested the antivirus engine, not every subscription bundle and device.
What the product actually adds
Real-time protection against malware, ransomware, exploits, malicious websites and scam pages is paired with Browser Guard. The Standard tier keeps the focus on device and browser security without requiring a VPN or identity-insurance bundle.
Limits, privacy and device caveats
The free scanner and paid real-time protection are not equivalent. A paid Standard subscription does not automatically include the VPN reserved for Plus. Browser extensions, device security and advanced features vary across Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. Review data collection, exclusions and restore options before removing a second scanner.
Editorial recommendation
Attractive to users who want focused protection and dislike multi-product identity bundles, subject to checkout price verification.
Vendor source: Malwarebytes Standard (Premium Security engine) product and plan information. Cross-check the exact regional checkout before payment.
P006 — Trend Micro Maximum Security
Best for: Best for anti-scam, banking and web-shopping safeguards.
Verified plan and total-cost caveat
The official US shop showed US$74.95 for a 12-month term against US$104.95 RRP, with a separate coupon potentially reducing checkout to US$54.95. Promotional coupons are conditional; renewal is at the then-current rate, not guaranteed to remain US$74.95.
Independent protection evidence, precisely scoped
Trend Micro Maximum Security was not among the named products in AV-TEST’s August 2026 Windows 11 consumer table. AV-Comparatives July–August 2026 tested Trend Micro Internet Security, a different suite, so its result must not be attributed to Maximum Security.
What the product actually adds
The suite promotes ransomware defense, phishing and webmail scam filtering, safer banking/shopping, parental controls, social privacy and protection on PC, Mac and mobile. The feature emphasis suits households concerned about deceptive websites as well as malware files.
Limits, privacy and device caveats
Do not conflate Maximum Security with Premium Security Suite: VPN inclusion differs. Regional online stores vary in device count, pricing and feature lists. Browser and email integrations depend on supported apps; inspect the supported-platform chart. The AI-app protection claim on the vendor’s page is a feature claim, not independently verified attack-blocking performance.
Editorial recommendation
Best suited to shoppers who prioritize online-fraud defenses and verify their exact OS and renewal terms.
Vendor source: Trend Micro Maximum Security product and plan information. Cross-check the exact regional checkout before payment.
P007 — Avast One Gold
Best for: Best paid upgrade path from a capable free security baseline.
Verified plan and total-cost caveat
Avast’s official US Avast One page advertised Gold from US$6.99/month; the word ‘from’ means billing interval, region, and introductory eligibility must be checked in the cart. Basic is free.
Independent protection evidence, precisely scoped
AV-TEST August 2026 evaluated Avast Free Antivirus 26.6 at 6/6/6 on Windows 11. This is not a laboratory test of the paid Gold bundle. AV-Comparatives July–August 2026 tested Avast One Free Antivirus, again not Gold-specific extras.
What the product actually adds
Gold adds a mix of device protection, phishing defenses, ransomware safeguards, privacy/VPN functions and system maintenance beyond Basic. Users can first examine the free security interface before buying extras.
Limits, privacy and device caveats
A feature grid may differ on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, and paid modules should not be confused with the no-cost baseline. Avast has a significant historical consumer-data controversy; privacy-conscious buyers should read the current privacy policy and consent controls instead of assuming ‘privacy suite’ implies minimal telemetry. VPN features overlap the separate VPN parent article.
Editorial recommendation
Reasonable when a user likes the free interface and values specific paid privacy tools enough to justify recurring charges.
Vendor source: Avast One Gold product and plan information. Cross-check the exact regional checkout before payment.
P008 — Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Windows Security)
Best for: Best no-extra-cost Windows 11 baseline.
Verified plan and total-cost caveat
Included with supported Windows 11 installations; no separate Defender Antivirus subscription is required. Microsoft 365’s separate cross-device Defender app and enterprise Defender products are not the same entitlement.
Independent protection evidence, precisely scoped
AV-TEST August 2026 evaluated Microsoft Defender Antivirus Consumer 4.18 on Windows 11 at 6/6 protection, 5.5/6 performance and 6/6 usability, a total of 17.5/18 under that lab’s methodology.
What the product actually adds
Built-in real-time malware protection, cloud-assisted detection, SmartScreen and Windows firewall integration avoid third-party subscription renewal. Windows Update and standard-user accounts remain essential defenses.
Limits, privacy and device caveats
Defender is not a universal antivirus license for macOS, iOS and Android. Windows 11’s included protection is different from Microsoft Defender for Individuals and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint. Antivirus alone does not patch unsupported operating systems or guarantee recovery from ransomware. Advanced family identity and VPN services are not included in the base antivirus.
Editorial recommendation
The sensible starting point for many Windows 11 users, especially when combined with backups, software updates and phishing-resistant authentication.
Vendor source: Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Windows Security) product and plan information. Cross-check the exact regional checkout before payment.
Which antivirus is right for your devices?
Windows 11 desktop or gaming PC
Start by checking whether Microsoft Defender is already active, whether Windows Update is current and whether a tested backup can restore files. Independent August 2026 AV-TEST results make it reasonable to consider the built-in option rather than automatically paying for a third-party suite. Paid Bitdefender, Norton and others can add controls, web filtering or support. Do not run two real-time antivirus engines simultaneously unless both vendors explicitly support that configuration; overlapping file-system filters can create conflicts.
Mixed Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone family
Count devices before selecting a plan. A five-device license may be cheaper than several single-device plans, but the same product name does not imply identical protections across platforms. On iOS, app sandboxing prevents traditional Windows-style system-wide scanning. Look instead at phishing protection, unsafe Wi-Fi alerts, identity alerts and supported browser integrations. On macOS, inspect permission prompts and background services. On Android, check web protection, app scanning and accessibility permissions. Read the device-by-device feature grid rather than the homepage badge.
Ransomware and backups
Ransomware protection can include behavior monitoring, protected folders, rollback or recovery tools. None guarantees that files will survive every attack. Maintain an offline or immutable backup with periodic restore tests. A bundled 50 GB cloud-backup allowance is helpful only if the right files are included and a restore actually works. For background on common attack patterns, AsumeTech’s device malware protection guide provides additional precautions.
Phishing, fraud and privacy
Antivirus cannot reliably detect every convincing phishing email, fraudulent payment request or social-engineering call. Browser reputation filters, email warnings, hardware-backed passkeys and multifactor authentication provide separate layers. A product with an included VPN may help on untrusted networks but cannot stop credential theft on a legitimate-looking phishing page. Our published VPN comparison evaluates VPN service choices separately. Security-suite telemetry may include suspicious file hashes, URLs, diagnostic information or cloud-submitted samples; check opt-outs and data retention policies before uploading sensitive files.
Price and renewal checklist
Write down the first charge, annual renewal, device allowance, supported OS versions, cancellation deadline, refund eligibility, auto-renew settings and bundled-service limits. Compare two-year total cost, not just a discounted monthly equivalent. For example, Norton’s verified US $49.99 first year plus $124.99 listed renewal is $174.98 before taxes over two years if the published renewal remains unchanged; a 60%-off banner alone conceals that difference. McAfee, ESET and Malwarebytes may display region-specific or dynamically rendered prices that require an actual cart review.
Frequently asked questions
Is Microsoft Defender enough in 2026?
For many updated Windows 11 systems, it is a credible baseline. AV-TEST’s August 2026 Windows consumer test scored Defender 6/6 protection, 5.5/6 performance and 6/6 usability. That does not replace backups, patching or safe account practices. Extra suites may be worthwhile for a household needing centralized support or parental tools.
Do antivirus suites include unlimited VPNs and password managers?
Not universally. Some entry plans cap VPN traffic or reserve unlimited data for a higher tier. Password vaults may be separate subscriptions, have export limitations or be limited by country. Treat both as independently evaluated tools rather than counting a bundled icon as a complete replacement.
Can I use one license on Windows and iOS?
Often, but not always. Verify device counts and platform coverage at checkout. Even when both apps are included, iOS features differ from Windows real-time file scanning because of platform security restrictions.
Does a perfect AV-TEST score mean perfect protection?
No. It reflects a specified lab’s finite tests, product versions, dates and Windows configuration. New threats, false alarms, user behavior and OS-specific differences still matter. Never extrapolate a result from ESET Ultimate to Premium or Avast Free to Gold without qualification.
What should I do if an antivirus flags a legitimate app?
Do not immediately disable all protections. Check the file’s official publisher, signature and release notes, submit a false-positive report to the vendor and consider an isolated test environment. Avoid broad permanent exclusions that would leave whole folders unprotected.
Editorial transparency and source ledger
This article is an evidence synthesis, not an AsumeTech hands-on laboratory test. The selected products are available consumer products as of 15 October 2026. The vendor links in each P001–P008 section support plan claims; independent evidence is drawn from AV-TEST August 2026, AV-Comparatives September 11 factsheet and TechRadar’s professional comparison. Test results and first-year prices can change independently. This article does not claim to have conducted scans, speed tests, malware simulations or refund purchases.
Bottom line: Choose by independently evidenced protection, actual platform support and full renewal cost. Pay extra only for features you will use; keep updates, backups and phishing-resistant authentication in place regardless of the antivirus vendor.
