James McAvoy Proposes Star Trek Prequel Focused on Young Picard’s Stargazer Years

James McAvoy has publicly outlined a conceptual pitch to portray a younger Jean-Luc Picard in a Star Trek prequel series. The proposal would see McAvoy once again step into a role originated by Sir Patrick Stewart, following his decade-long tenure playing the younger Charles Xavier in the X-Men film franchise.

McAvoy’s vision for the series focuses on Picard’s early career as an officer, specifically his time serving on the USS Stargazer. While the Picard known to audiences in Star Trek: The Next Generation is defined by his diplomacy and measured leadership, McAvoy describes his version of the character as “reckless.” This interpretation bridges the gap between the hot-headed cadet seen in the TNG episode “Tapestry” and the legendary captain of the Federation flagship.

The Stargazer Era and the Picard Maneuver

The USS Stargazer holds a prominent place in Star Trek lore as Picard’s first command. He served aboard the Constellation-class vessel for 22 years, an unusually long tenure that ended with the Battle of Maxia. It was during this period that Picard developed the “Picard Maneuver,” a tactical warp jump used to create a short-lived duplicate image of a ship to confuse enemy sensors.

A series centered on this era would offer a departure from the established Star Trek timeline, which has recently focused on the post-Voyager era in Star Trek: Picard or the distant future in Star Trek: Discovery. By focusing on the Stargazer, a prequel could explore the formative military and personal conflicts that hardened Picard into the philosopher-captain fans recognize.

A Legacy of Succession

The potential casting carries weight due to the established professional relationship between McAvoy and Stewart. McAvoy began playing Stewart’s X-Men character in 2011’s First Class and continued through 2019’s Dark Phoenix. Stewart has previously acknowledged the symmetry in their careers, joking that McAvoy is “taking over” his most iconic roles.

While Paramount+ has not officially announced a Stargazer-centered project, the studio continues to expand the franchise through various timelines. With Star Trek: Picard concluding its three-season run in 2023, the narrative space for a deep dive into the character’s history remains open. McAvoy has indicated that his pitch is more than a passing joke, presenting a serious narrative framework for how the character evolved during his two decades on the Stargazer.
