The first-generation iPhone Duo officially launches today, October 23, 2026, marking Apple’s first entry into the foldable smartphone market. However, as the device reaches the hands of early adopters, technical reports are already outlining a roadmap for future iterations intended to address the current model’s most notable hardware omissions.
While the device is now available, supply is reportedly under significant strain. New orders for the iPhone Duo currently show shipping estimates slipping into January 25, 2027. Mark Gurman, writing for MacRumors, characterized the launch as a “major mistake” due to these severe supply constraints, which have left many potential buyers unable to secure a unit for the holiday season.

Hardware Roadmap
The first-generation iPhone Duo notably lacks several “Pro” features standard on other high-end iPhones, including Face ID, an Action button, and a dedicated telephoto camera.
Projected Larger Displays
Further down the timeline, reports have pointed toward a proposed screen size increase for the device. While the current model features a 7.6-inch inner display, there are reports of a move to a roughly 8.1-inch panel. This increase of approximately half an inch would further distinguish the foldable from the iPhone Pro Max and position it more firmly as a compact tablet alternative.

Current technical specifications for the Duo 1 include:
- Inner Display: 7.6-inch foldable OLED.
- Camera System: Wide and Ultra Wide lenses (Telephoto omitted).
As Apple continues to iterate on the foldable form factor, future models are expected to serve as the primary vehicles for folding-screen refinements. For now, users purchasing the first-generation model must weigh the foldable utility against the lack of established Pro-tier camera and biometric hardware.
