OpenAI Targets $1.25 Trillion Valuation in Funding Bridge to 2027 IPO

OpenAI has reportedly pitched a $1.25 trillion valuation target to investors. The figure represents a slight downward revision from an initial $1.4 trillion valuation pitched to investors earlier in October 2026, following feedback regarding the company’s long-term capital requirements and the current competitive landscape.

The capital injection serves as a massive financial bridge as the company moves toward an eventual public listing. While OpenAI confidentially submitted a draft S-1 to the SEC on June 8, 2026, current internal targets point to a 2027 IPO rather than a debut within the current calendar year.

Revenue Growth vs. Infrastructure Costs

The targeted $1.25 trillion valuation follows a significant acceleration in OpenAI’s top-line performance. The company reached an annualized revenue run-rate of approximately $50 billion at the end of September 2026.

However, the scale of revenue is currently offset by the immense costs of artificial intelligence infrastructure. Financial data reported by the Financial Times indicates that OpenAI expects to face nearly $280 billion in negative free cash flow between 2026 and 2030. This deficit is driven by the purchase of advanced chips and the construction of massive data centers required to train and deploy next-generation models.

Strategic Pivot and Competition

This funding round arrives just as the AI sector prepares for a major shift in public market activity. Rival Anthropic is reportedly planning a mid-November 2026 IPO that could see its valuation reach $2 trillion, placing pressure on OpenAI to solidify its balance sheet before its own public debut.

OpenAI has spent the last year refining its corporate identity to accommodate these high-level investments. In October 2025, the organization completed its transition into OpenAI Group PBC, a Public Benefit Corporation. This structure was designed to facilitate large-scale private capital raises and commercial operations while maintaining a fiduciary link to the original nonprofit OpenAI Foundation, which retains oversight of the company’s core mission.

The recent capital raise efforts are expected to be among the final private rounds before the company shifts its focus entirely toward a 2027 public offering. The transition marks the final stage of OpenAI’s evolution from a research-focused nonprofit startup into one of the most highly valued commercial entities in the global technology sector.
