Google Photos version 7.97 contains a fix for the Android version of the app that resolves a persistent bug preventing edited images from appearing in other applications. The fix addresses a synchronization failure that had forced users to use manual workarounds to share modified photos for several months.

The resolution is included in Google Photos version 7.97 and remains stable in the subsequent version 7.98. Users who have struggled to find recently edited pictures while using the attachment pickers in apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, Discord, or Google Messages should see the issue resolved once they update to these specific builds via the Google Play Store.

The bug prevented the Android MediaStore from updating when an image was overwritten during the editing process.

The Technical Cause: MediaStore Indexing

According to technical analysis of the bug, the visibility issue stemmed from a failure to refresh the Android MediaStore or local media URI indexing. When a user edited a photo and selected the “Save” option to overwrite the original file, Google Photos failed to signal the system that the file had been modified. Consequently, while the Google Photos app itself displayed the updated image, the Android system-wide media picker continued to look for the original file state or lost track of the file’s location entirely.

This behavior effectively “hid” the edited images from third-party apps. During the months this bug persisted—with reports dating back to July 2026— many users discovered that using the “Save as copy” function served as a functional workaround. Because “Save as copy” creates an entirely new file with a fresh index entry, it avoided the refresh failure associated with overwriting existing media.

Recent Photos Maintenance

This update follows a period of active maintenance for the Google Photos editor. In October 2026, Google released version 7.94 to address a separate but equally disruptive issue where the editor’s primary UI elements, including the Share and Trash buttons, became completely unresponsive for some users.

Version 7.97 resolves the indexing failure and addresses the primary “vanishing” behavior when overwriting files.

To verify your current version, open Google Photos, tap your profile icon, navigate to Photos settings > About, and check the version number listed. If you are on a version older than 7.97, an update is required to restore proper image visibility across the Android ecosystem.
