Nicolas Cage and The Night Agent star Gabriel Basso are set to lead the cast of The Brand, a prison thriller based on David Grann’s investigative reporting into the rise of organized crime within the American penal system. The project, which also features Alexander Ludwig and Maria Bakalova, is being developed as an “epic gangster story” according to producer Anthony Mastromauro.

The film is an adaptation of Grann’s February 2004 New Yorker article of the same name. That reporting detailed the evolution of the Aryan Brotherhood from a small prison gang into a highly structured criminal syndicate that coordinated murders and drug trafficking from behind bars. In this cinematic version, Cage will portray Carter Briggs, the formidable leader of a white prison gang at San Quentin. Alexander Ludwig is cast as Taylor Hartman, a young inmate serving a life sentence who becomes Briggs’ protégé.

While Basso and Bakalova have been confirmed as primary cast members, their specific roles remain undisclosed. The production represents a significant “villainous” turn for Cage, positioning him at the center of a narrative that explores the internal politics and brutal hierarchies of maximum-security incarceration.

Production History and Timeline

The Brand serves as a revived and retooled version of a project that has been in development for several years. An earlier iteration titled Branded was first announced in 2022 with a different cast, including Alex Pettyfer and Frank Grillo. The current production features a new title and an updated lead roster, marking a formal shift in the project’s creative direction.

Vincent Grashaw is attached to direct from a screenplay written by Alessandro Camon. Camon previously explored themes of the American justice system and military life in films such as The Messenger. According to production schedules, the film is slated to enter pre-production in early 2027, suggesting a likely theatrical or streaming release in 2028.

The project continues the trend of adapting David Grann’s non-fiction work for the screen, following the high-profile success of Killers of the Flower Moon. By focusing on the “gangster” elements of the source material, the production aims to frame the historical rise of the prison syndicate as a sprawling crime saga rather than a standard survival thriller.
