Strictly Come Dancing professional Dianne Buswell has opened up about the “shock to the system” she experienced following the birth of her son earlier this year. The dancer, who is preparing for her return to the ballroom for the 2026 series, described the recovery process as a “painful ordeal” that left her questioning her future in professional dance.
Buswell and her partner, Joe Sugg, welcomed their son, Bowden Mark Richard Sugg, on March 16, 2026. The infant’s name carries deep personal significance for the couple, honoring both Buswell’s father and Sugg’s grandfather. However, the joy of the new arrival was accompanied by a difficult physical recovery that Buswell admitted was far more taxing than she had anticipated.
The Australian dancer revealed that the aftermath of the birth was so severe she had to rely heavily on Sugg for basic movements. Dianne Buswell reported that she was unable to use her stomach muscles to get out of bed at night, requiring physical assistance from Sugg to even sit up. This loss of core strength—a vital tool for a ballroom professional—led to private fears that her dancing career might have reached an untimely end.

A High-Stakes Return to the Ballroom
Despite the “scary” recovery hurdles, Buswell has returned to rehearsals for the upcoming 2026 series of Strictly Come Dancing. Her return is highly anticipated following her victory in the 2024 series, where she lifted the Glitterball trophy alongside comedian Chris McCausland. The journey from being bedbound in March to returning to the high-intensity training of the show represents a significant personal milestone for the pro.
The 2026 series marks a transformative era for the long-running BBC program. The production has undergone a major hosting overhaul, with longtime presenters Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman departing the show. The new series will be fronted by a trio of hosts: Emma Willis, Josh Widdicombe, and current professional dancer Johannes Radebe, who steps into a presenting role.
While the physical recovery was a “shock,” Buswell’s transition back to the dance floor comes as the show navigates these significant cast and structural changes. For Buswell, the focus remains on regaining her full strength after a year that tested her resilience both as an athlete and a new mother.
