Apple’s announcement of the iPhone 18 Pro on September 9, 2026, has finalized the flagship landscape for the year, positioning the device against Google’s Pixel 11 Pro, which arrived on August 20. Optics and the Variable Aperture
In a significant shift for Apple’s camera hardware, the iPhone 18 Pro introduces a variable aperture main camera. The system can physically shift between f/1.48 and f/4.0, allowing for mechanical control over depth of field and light intake. This move mirrors a hardware-first approach to photography that competes with Google’s established reliance on computational AI for image processing.
