How Valve’s Lepton Tool Ported 40% of the Steam Frame’s Launch Library

Valve began sending the first wave of purchase invites for its new Steam Frame VR headset on September 18, 2026, following a week-long reservation lottery. The rollout marks the debut of Valve’s first standalone VR hardware, a device that relies heavily on a new software tool called “Lepton” to bridge the content gap between PC-based VR and the existing library of Android-based mobile VR titles.

The Steam Frame enters the market with a starting price of $1,059 for the 256GB model, while a high-capacity 1TB version is priced at $1,299. Despite the premium positioning, Valve has confirmed that the base kit excludes a power supply unit, which is sold separately as a $29 accessory. The headset is powered by an ARM64-based Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and 16GB of RAM, distancing it from the x86 architecture used in Valve’s Steam Deck handheld.

To address the lack of native Linux-based VR software for ARM processors, Valve developed Lepton to function as a compatibility container. Technical documentation indicates that Lepton utilizes Waydroid, LineageOS, and Android Open Source Project (AOSP) components to execute Android games within the headset’s operating system. This approach allows the Steam Frame to run titles originally developed for the Meta Quest ecosystem without requiring a tethered PC.

Early data from the “Great on Frame” certification program highlights the importance of this translation layer. Out of the first 130 games certified for the device, 52 titles—approximately 40% of the launch library—are reported to be Android builds running through Lepton rather than native ports. This software strategy mirrors Valve’s use of Proton on the Steam Deck, though Lepton is specifically optimized for games and lacks the full OS interface required to run general Android applications like Netflix or Discord.

Lepton serves as one part of a broader “compatibility trinity” for the Steam Frame. It works alongside Proton, which handles Windows-to-Linux translation, and FEX, a tool that translates x86 instructions to the ARM architecture used by the Snapdragon chip. Valve is attempting to lower the technical hurdles for developers to migrate their existing Meta Quest catalogs to the Steam storefront with minimal code modification.

While the Steam Frame is capable of running high-end PC VR games via a wireless or wired connection to a computer, the inclusion of Lepton suggests a pivot toward a more self-contained ecosystem. The device ships with Half-Life: Alyx, though the performance of that specific title relies on the hardware’s ability to interface with external PC hardware or its internal translation layers for ARM-native execution.
