Magic: The Gathering Reveals Marvel: Darkhold Destiny Set and Movie Promo

Wizards of the Coast has officially unveiled the next major chapter in its Universes Beyond collaboration, announcing Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny during a presentation at New York Comic Con on October 10, 2026. The set, which is scheduled for a worldwide release on April 9, 2027, marks a significant shift for the franchise by introducing an original narrative crafted through a collaboration between the Magic narrative team and Marvel.

The expansion centers on the supernatural and mystical corners of the Marvel Universe, featuring prominent characters such as Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Thor, and Ghost Rider. Antagonists like Hela, Dormammu, and Blade are also confirmed to appear as the set explores an original story.

Exclusive ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Theater Giveaway

The announcement included immediate details for a promotional tie-in linked to the upcoming theatrical release of Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Doomsday.” Fans who attend the film during its opening weekend from December 17 to December 20, 2026, will have the opportunity to receive a theater-exclusive promo card titled “Doctor Doom, King of Latveria.”

This giveaway is currently confirmed for Infinity Vision screenings at participating theaters, including Regal Cinemas. The promotion serves as a bridge between the current year’s cinematic schedule and the upcoming 2027 tabletop release, though Wizards of the Coast has not yet specified if the card will be legal for Standard play or remain a collectible and Eternal-legal piece.

Original Narrative and New Characters

Unlike previous Universes Beyond sets that primarily adapted existing comic book arcs, “Darkhold Destiny” will debut new lore. This includes the introduction of Fraxine, an original character who will appear both in the card set and in a tie-in Marvel comic series written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly.

The gameplay structure for the release will follow the established Universes Beyond format, headlined by four preconstructed Commander decks. Each deck is themed around specific mystical factions or locations within the Marvel mythos:

  • Lords of Hel: A Rakdos-aligned deck (Black/Red) focused on the underworld and its rulers.
  • Midnight Sons: An Orzhov-aligned deck (White/Black) featuring the supernatural team of monster hunters.
  • Gods of Asgard: A Naya-aligned deck (Red/Green/White) highlighting the Norse-inspired cosmic entities.
  • Strange Academy: An Esper-aligned deck (White/Blue/Black) centered on the mystical training grounds and its students.

This expansion represents the first major release in a multi-year partnership between the two companies, with additional sets expected to follow throughout 2027 and beyond.
