Jeff Kaplan Explains ‘Clinical Separation’ From Overwatch for Mental Health

Jeff Kaplan, the former game director of Overwatch, has not played the game or engaged with its community since his departure from Blizzard Entertainment in April 2021. In recent remarks, Kaplan described his total detachment from the franchise as a “clinical separation” necessary for his own mental well-being.

According to a report from GameSpot, Kaplan has spent the years since his resignation avoiding Overwatch-related subreddits, YouTube videos, and news cycles. He noted that the decision to “ghost” his own creation was a deliberate move to protect his “own psyche” following a nearly two-decade tenure at Blizzard that ended under significant corporate strain.

The transition from leading global hits to indie development has been a humbling experience for Kaplan.

The Ultimatum That Led to Resignation

While Kaplan’s exit in 2021 was initially shrouded in mystery, details regarding the circumstances of his departure have recently surfaced. Kaplan revealed that his decision to leave was catalyzed by an ultimatum from a former Activision Blizzard CFO. The executive reportedly threatened to lay off 1,000 employees if Overwatch failed to meet specific, aggressive revenue targets—a pressure tactic Kaplan found untenable.

Through this clinical separation, he has been able to focus on new ventures without the emotional weight of the ongoing changes to Overwatch 2, a sequel that has evolved significantly since he last oversaw its development.

Building Kintsugiyama and The Legend of California

Kaplan has since transitioned into the independent development scene, founding a new studio called Kintsugiyama in 2022. Moving away from the high-fantasy and polished sci-fi of his previous work, his new team is currently developing an open-world western action-survival shooter titled The Legend of California.

The project is being published by Dreamhaven, the media company established by Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime. The partnership marks a reunion of sorts for the veteran developers, though the scale of the operation is vastly different from their time at the head of a multi-billion dollar gaming titan.

Kaplan has described the shift to indie development as a “humbling” experience. He noted that the transition has come with a social cost, observing that some industry peers who previously collaborated with him on global hits now ignore his emails. Despite the loss of the massive corporate resources he once commanded, Kaplan’s current focus remains on the survival-shooter and maintaining the strict personal boundaries that allowed him to walk away from his legacy at Blizzard.
