Meta has expanded the WhatsApp Events feature to allow users to invite guests who do not have a WhatsApp account, a move that positions the messaging giant as a direct competitor to invitation-first platforms like Partiful. In an announcement on November 5, 2026, the company confirmed that the update is rolling out globally to individual and group chats.

The update marks a significant shift in WhatsApp’s ecosystem, effectively lowering the barrier for social coordination by moving beyond its traditional “walled garden.” Guests who receive an event link but do not use the app can now view event details and submit an RSVP through a dedicated web-based portal without needing to download the application. To confirm attendance, non-users are required to provide their name and a mobile phone number.

To manage these gatherings, WhatsApp is introducing a centralized “Events Home” hub located within the app’s Settings menu. This hub allows users to track both upcoming and past gatherings they have organized or been invited to, moving event management away from isolated message threads. This centralized approach targets the friction often found in large group chats where event details can be buried under new messages.

According to official Meta documentation, the expanded toolkit includes several features designed for event planners, such as the ability to add custom cover photos, send automated reminders to guests, and enable a “plus-one” option for attendees. These additions bring WhatsApp’s functionality closer to specialized event platforms that have gained popularity for their frictionless, cross-platform invitation systems.

Privacy and Safety Guardrails

While the feature opens invitations to outsiders, Meta has implemented specific privacy measures to protect host and guest information. Guests without a WhatsApp account will not be able to see the specific address of an event until they have submitted an RSVP. Additionally, host phone numbers are hidden from unknown guests to prevent unsolicited contact.

Technical implementation details shared by Digit indicate that non-users can interact with the RSVP portal to respond to an invitation.

Industry analysts view this expansion as a strategic strike against niche competitors. While platforms like Partiful have thrived on the ability to coordinate groups across different messaging apps, WhatsApp is leveraging its massive existing user base to offer the same convenience without requiring organizers to leave the app where their primary conversations already occur.
