Apple captured a record 50% of global smartphone revenue in the third quarter of 2026, according to data released by Counterpoint Research. The milestone highlights a significant shift toward “value over volume” as the industry grappled with a 19% year-over-year plunge in total shipments while simultaneously reaching new revenue heights.

Despite the drop in the number of units sold, global smartphone revenue rose 3% to reach $114 billion. This growth was driven primarily by a surge in average selling prices (ASPs), which increased 27% across the industry. Apple stood at the center of this trend, with its iPhone wholesale ASP crossing the $1,000 threshold for the first time in a third quarter to reach $1,031.

Strategic Shift and the iPhone 18 Pro

Several factors contributed to Apple’s revenue dominance during the quarter. A key driver was the specific launch strategy for the iPhone 18 series. Unlike previous years, the company did not launch a “vanilla” or standard base model alongside the Pro versions. This forced the product mix heavily toward premium price tiers at the start of the cycle.

While analysts at Omdia and IDC reported slightly different shipment figures—noting declines around 20%—all major tracking firms agree on the overwhelming revenue lead held by Apple. The company successfully leveraged its high-end positioning to offset the broader market’s volume contraction.

The Global Memory Crisis and Rising Costs

The increase in smartphone prices was not limited to Apple. The entire industry faced a severe memory supply crisis, with DRAM and NAND costs reportedly surging by as much as 350% year-over-year. These component costs forced manufacturers across the board to raise retail prices to protect margins.

Samsung, which remains the global leader in shipment volume with a 22% market share, followed a similar premiumization path. Its revenue share stood at 19% during the quarter, significantly trailing Apple. Together, the two companies now control a “duopoly” share of 69% of all global smartphone revenue.

Market Summary: Q3 2026 Performance

The following data points highlight the divergence between shipment volume and financial performance during the quarter:

  • Total Global Revenue: $114 billion (+3% YoY).
  • Global Shipment Volume: -19% YoY.
  • Apple Revenue Share: 50% (All-time Q3 record).
  • Samsung Revenue Share: 19%.
  • Apple iPhone ASP: $1,031.
  • Industry-Wide ASP Increase: 27%.

The current results suggest Apple’s ecosystem remains resilient even in a contracting shipment market. By focusing on high-margin Pro models and managing the impacts of the memory supply chain, the company has widened the financial gap between itself and its nearest competitors.
