A long time ago, movie genius James Cameron started a film empire that will be remembered forever. That, of course, was his groundbreaking movie Avatar from 2009. The sci-fi epic went uncharted territory and was praised worldwide for its stunning visuals, CGI, and cinematography. It was also praised for how well it blended CGI with traditional filmmaking. Then, after years of waiting, Avatar: The Way of Water came out last year. It was another step up in Pandora’s glittering universe, with even more vivid visuals thanks to how far technology has come since the first movie. Due to a change in Disney’s theatrical release schedule, audiences must wait longer than planned to see the next installment.
Avatar 3 was supposed to come out on December 20, 2024, but now the date has been moved back a year to December 19, 2025. The new release date for Avatar 4 is December 21, 2029. This is three years later than the original December 18, 2026 release date. The new date for the release of Avatar 5 is December 19, 2031, three years later than its original release date of December 22, 2028.
Even though this is terrible news for people looking forward to watching, the good news is that technology will likely improve so much by 2031 that Pandora will only benefit from it. Since Cameron held off on releasing The Way of Water so that technology could improve, maybe something good will come.
Avatar 3 has to fill some Gaps
If The Way of Water is any indication, the delay won’t hurt Avatar 3, and the anticipation might grow. The Way of Water was a huge hit in theaters, and its $2.3 billion cume made it the highest-grossing movie of 2022, beating out James Cameron’s legendary blockbuster Titanic. But it has yet to make as much money as the original Avatar, which has made a mind-blowing $2.9 billion and is still the biggest hit.
