The death toll from the torrential rains that swept Beijing as a result of Typhoon Duxuri has risen to 38. Chinese media reports quoting local authorities state that 33 people died due to floods and house collapses, while five others lost their lives during rescue and relief operations. Tragically, 18 people, including a rescue worker, are still missing.

Unprecedented Rainfall in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei

From July 29 to August 2, the regions of Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei experienced continuous and heavy rains caused by Typhoon “Duxuri,” the fifth to hit this year. Beijing, in particular, faced the highest recorded rainfall in its history, with 744.8 mm of precipitation registered in the Wangjiayuan Reservoir in Changping District, according to the country’s meteorological bureau.

Government’s Efforts in Disaster Relief

Recognizing the scale of the disaster, the Chinese central government has already allocated 520 million yuan from central funds for natural disaster relief in the flood-affected areas of Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei, as well as in northeastern provinces.
