From Libya to Tunisia, dozens of people are missing in the sinking of a boat carrying migrants

76 people are missing after a boat sank off the east coast of Tunisia after leaving the Libyan city of Zuwara with 100 migrants on board, the Tunisian coast guard announced yesterday.

Coast Guard spokesman Hossam El-Din Jebali confirmed in a statement that 24 migrants have been rescued while they are still in searches underway for the remaining missing off the coast of the governorate of Sfax (south-east), where the dinghy sank on Sunday night. The Coast Guard confirmed that it had rescued “on the morning of 24 May 16 pedestrians of different African and Asian nationalities whose rubber dinghy, exploited in a process of irregular migration, it sank about six nautical miles south-east of the island of Kerkennah ”of the Governorate of Sfax. One body, according to the statement.

On Saturday, the Tunisian Navy announced the rescue of 81 migrants, including a woman, after leaving the Libyan coast in a rickety boat.

Meanwhile, Tunisian authorities announced in early May that the bodies of 24 migrants had been found after their boats sank off the central eastern coast of Tunisia.
