Hackers stole passwords, targeted US Department of Defense entities in radical raid – security company

Hackers have breached at least nine organizations globally in sensitive sectors and targeted US Department of Defense entity, a cybersecurity company said.

According to a report from security firm Palo Alto Networks, a group of Unidentified criminals scanned at least 370 servers in the United States in September and October. The scans were “in largely indiscriminate in nature” the firm said, with targets ranging from educational institutions to servers connected to the Department of Defence.

Using publicly available Chinese-language tools, hackers have breached at least nine organizations globally, the company said. Palo Alto Networks did not identify which organizations were compromised, but claimed they worked in industries related to technology, defense, health, energy and education.

The Vice President of Palo Alto Networks responsible for threat intelligence, Ryan Olson, told CNN that the nine victims were “Advise of the spear “ of a greater apparent espionage campaign. Olson said the hackers have stolen passwords from targeted organizations they hope to keep long term access to their networks.

CNN reported that the US National Security Agency (NSA) and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) were monitoring hacker activities and that the NSA helped Palo Alto Networks analyze the threat. The NSA and CISA declined to comment on identity of hackers, the channel said.
