Earthquake Strikes Kahramanmaraş, Turkey

Today, an earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale struck the state of “Kahramanmaraş” in southern Turkey. Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, AFAD, said in a statement that the earthquake occurred in the area of “Gokson” at a depth of 7.1 km, while no earthquake occurred, announcing possible damage caused by the earthquake.

Increase in Earthquake Activity

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority announced that on Sunday there was a 4.3-degree earthquake in the state of “Erzurum” and another of a magnitude of 4.6 in the province of “Malatya”, in the eastern part of the country.

Past Earthquake Tragedy

Interestingly, a massive earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale hit southern Turkey and northern Syria on 6 February, followed by another measuring 7.6, followed by thousands of violent aftershocks. This devastating event claimed tens of thousands of lives and caused extensive damage and destruction to buildings and property in the two countries.
