Samsung Unpacks Galaxy S24 packed with Google AI

Samsung and Google Cloud Enter Multi-Year Partnership to Integrate Cutting-edge AI in Galaxy S24 Devices.

During the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event, Samsung unveiled a multi-year collaboration with Google Cloud, aiming to incorporate the latest generative AI (GenAI) capabilities into its new Galaxy S24 smartphone series.

Samsung is set to become the first Google Cloud partner to implement Gemini Pro on Vertex AI as the Galaxy S24 devices roll out in the coming weeks. Vertex AI, Google’s machine learning platform, facilitates the rapid development of new use cases using custom tools. The collaboration introduces Google’s Gemini AI, a family of large language models (LLMs) unveiled in late 2023.

Gemini Pro, integrated into the Galaxy S24, will empower users to benefit from summarization and classification features across various Samsung apps, including Notes, Voice Recorder, and Keyboard. The collaboration emphasizes Gemini’s ability to generalize, understand, operate, and amalgamate diverse information types like text, code, images, and video.

Google’s Imagen 2 GenAI image technology will enhance the Galaxy S24’s Gallery app with photo-editing functions such as inpainting, outpainting, and composite editing. Imagen 2, recognized as Google’s advanced text-to-image diffusion technology, was developed by Google DeepMind. Both Gemini and Imagen 2 functionalities will be delivered to smartphones through cloud-based services.

Samsung will also explore Gemini Ultra, Google’s largest model designed for handling complex tasks. Additionally, the Galaxy S24 series will leverage Gemini Nano, an on-device LLM integrated into the Android 14 OS. Gemini Nano will power tasks like Google’s Chat Assist, enabling message rewriting into conversational or formal tones.

Google’s Circle to Search function, allowing seamless searching without app switching, is introduced for users through the home button or navigation screen. This functionality, working across all three Galaxy S24 devices, enables users to select items for search by circling, scribbling, highlighting, or tapping.

AI functionalities extend to Live Translate, providing instant language translation for phone calls, and Transcript Assist, which records conversations and identifies different speakers automatically. The phones feature Interpreter, enabling two-way, real-time voice and text translations within native apps.

Samsung confirmed that these AI features would eventually be extended to the Galaxy S23 series. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian highlighted that the partnership empowers Samsung’s developers to leverage Google Cloud infrastructure for developing and delivering GenAI-powered applications for their smartphones.
