Why Rockstar Kept Refueling in GTA 6 While Cutting Grocery Mechanics

Rockstar Games has confirmed that the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI will feature a vehicle refueling system, a mechanic designed to balance immersion with the fast-paced nature of the series. To address concerns that the feature might slow down gameplay, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson clarified that the refueling process will only take approximately 10 seconds.

The developer’s decision to include gas stops stems from a desire to add strategic depth to the open-world experience. Nelson defended the implementation by highlighting its efficiency, noting that the 10-second window is a relatively quick “fill-up” that should not frustrate players. “You can’t complain about that,” Nelson stated regarding the speed of the animation.

The Survival of Refueling Over Other Realism Features

The inclusion of refueling is part of a broader “strategic realism” philosophy at Rockstar. While the studio considered several survival and lifestyle mechanics for protagonists Jason and Lucia, not every feature made the final cut. According to GamesRadar+, Rockstar scrapped a planned grocery-shopping and fridge-restocking system because it was deemed too complex without offering enough gameplay payoff.

Unlike grocery shopping, which was viewed as adding unnecessary friction, refueling is intended to influence heist planning and high-stakes missions. Players may find themselves needing to ensure a getaway vehicle has a full tank before initiating a job, or monitoring fuel levels during long-distance travel across the state of Leonida. This 10-second interaction acts as a brief tactical pause rather than a tedious chore.

Gas Stations as Utility Hubs

In GTA 6, gas stations will serve as more than just fuel stops. They are designed as multi-functional hubs for various vehicle types. For players using electric vehicles (EVs), stations will provide parallel recharging points to ensure those cars remain operational. Additionally, gas stations will continue to serve as locations for vehicle repairs, consolidating maintenance needs into specific map locations.

The system is currently tuned as a 10-second animation or quick-time event, ensuring that even during police pursuits, the mechanic remains a high-risk, high-reward decision rather than a lengthy interruption. This balance is part of Rockstar’s effort to ground the 80-hour campaign in a believable world without sacrificing the series’ signature momentum.

Grand Theft Auto VI is currently scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, and will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at launch.
